BearHeart’s Breakfast Green Smoothie

This is a recipe from one of our International Green Smoothie Day Challengers

Living in Scandinavia, I am 8 hours before Eastern American time, so I just had my breakfast smoothie - my first green smoothie in about a week and it tasted good and felt fabulously to drink it. Good to be back on the green smoothie track! I don´t want to get off it when this challenge is over.

  • 1 stem of celery (including the leaves)
  • 1 orange
  • 1 green (granny smith) apple, peeled
  • handful spinach
  • handful romane lettuce
  • handful lambs quarters (lovely “weeds” from the garden)
  • small piece of ginger
  • 1-2 teaspoon honey
  • 1-2 cups water

I like it since it is not too sweet, but I added a little bit of honey and even then it almost was not sweet.

Mmmm. I feel loaded for my morning walk!

Let’s Give Thanks for Cinnamon!

Yesterday was Thanksgiving here in the USA!  Many people joined their families around dinner tables to indulge in some food and the pure enjoyment of being with loved ones. As I reflected on what I was thankful for, I got a whiff of sweet cinnamon, and I knew I had to add it to my list of thanks!

2009_06_23-cinnamonSo, cinnamon is the magic ingredient in the smoothie I wrote about the other day, but what is cinnamon, and is it beneficial to us?

Cinnamon is a small tree that is commonly found in South Asia and the Middle East region. The cinnamon that we typically find in our supermarkets is the bark of this tree, which is either sold as the dried tubular form known as a quill or stick, or ground into a powder.

Although it is available throughout the year, the fragrant, sweet and warm taste of cinnamon is a perfect spice to use during the winter months. Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a medicine.

Cinnamon has extremely high anti-oxidant activity, and the oil of cinnamon has strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Cinnamon is also a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium.

Studies have shown that cinnamon:

  • may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar levels and is therefore beneficial for people with Type 2 Diabetes.
  • can lower cholesterol.
  • has a role in aiding digestion.
  • can help to treat diarrhoea.
  • can help to cure the common cold.
  • combined with honey can reduce arthritis pain.
  • can help to boost memory and cognitive function.
  • is useful for treating toothaches.
  • can Eliminate bad breath.
  • can cureuring headaches and migraine pain.
  • can reduce the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells
  • has an anti-clotting effect on the blood
  • is a natural preservative as when added to food it inhibits bacterial growth

So, let’s give thanks for the many benefits of cinnamon! In fact, during the GSQ 24-Day Countdown Christmas, a few recipes featuring cinnamon will be shared with participants! I hope you’ll join us!

Warm Your Winter Nights!

As the nights are drawing in, (it’s dark here by 4:00pm here aaagh!), sometimes the thought of an early evening juice just doesn’t have the same appeal as it does on those fabulous summer evenings.

This recipe looks to remedy this. It is perfect when you feel a little chilly, or in need of a comforting hug as you curl up in front of the fire. The addition of cinnamon really transforms a simple smoothie to complete other level.

Winter Punch Smoothie

Juice:

2 apples

1 carrot

2 oranges, peeled

½ lemon with skin

Transfer to blender and add:

Cinnamon to taste (I used 2 sticks – but then I’m a mega cinnamon fan!)

1 banana

Handful of spinach (add more if you wish)

And blend!!!

This is absolutely fabulous as it is really comforting on cold winter nights. Enjoy!

carrotsCarrots aren’t just good for Bugs Bunny to munch on! Or just for giving your smoothies an orange color! They are also an excellent vegetable, having both nutritional and medicinal values which are essential for our optimum health.

They contain a very complete nutrition to provide our body with essential enzymes, vitamins and minerals. A single carrot will supply all your vitamin A needs for the whole day. In fact, Chinese medical practitioners recommend eating carrots to give your liver more energy!

Carrot Juice is an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.  Carrots are also rich in biotin, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and sodium. They also offer an excellent source of beta-carotene which is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that has been reported to positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including:

•    Balancing blood acidity and blood sugar.
•    Detoxifying the liver and reducing toxicity in the body
•    Reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing deposits in the arteries

Chinese practitioners have said that carrots taste sweet, and are good for the health of spleen and stomach.

The best thing about carrots is that they are easily assimilated by our body, especially when blended or juiced, to break down the cell walls.

So try adding carrots to your juices and smoothies, enjoy their colour and taste, and relish the fact that you are nourishing your body optimally at the same time!

Post Workout - Green Goodness

After a workout, your body needs to be replenished – even if you aren’t feeling particularly hungry. After your workout, while you’re resting, is the time that your muscles are looking for energy to build, repair and become stronger. The energy they’re looking for is in the form of broken down carbs, fat and protein from the food you eat.

If they can’t find the fuel they need, they start breaking down their own cells to fuel the repair and growth. If you don’t eat what your body needs, all that hard work you did will literally go right down the tubes.

This delicious green goodness contains protein, healthy, complex carbs, fiber, antioxidants, and good fats to help nourish those muscles that just worked so hard for you.

kaleRecipe:

  • ½ cup water
  • 2 generous handfuls of spinach
  • 1 handful of kale
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ¼ cup of raspberries
  • 1 banana

Whir that all up in your blender and enjoy!

If you like your smoothies creamier, freeze the banana and the berries prior to blending them.

Hey Green Smoothie Super Star!

Here’s an interesting taste treat you might like to try.

I’ve been using more fresh parsley in my salads, juices and in my smoothies…today I made a super tasting powerhouse:

Pears, Pineapple, Parsley!

  • 2 ripe pears
  • 1/3 of a fresh pineapple (approx)
  • half a frozen banana (to add body and potassium)
  • 1/3 of a large bunch of parsley (approx)
  • 1/2″ slice of fresh ginger
  • 1 cup of filtered water
  • 1 cup of ice cubes (optional)

**I have a Blendtec - so I add a cup of ice cubes on top of everything, too…
this is thick and creamy - eliminate the banana and add more water if you want a thinner outcome.

Fruity Veggy Smoothie. . .

I like taking other recipes and changing ingredients but this week I have been inventing my own. And I have now discovered the secret to enjoying green smoothies. Add More Water!

Makes more than one litre

2 Mangoes Blackberries

3 Apples

1 bag of spinach leaves or 4 cups of fresh from the garden.

1 cup Blackberries frozen or fresh

1 head of Celery (you have to like celery or substitute a favourite veggy)

8 large Tomatoes

1 pint of Blueberries (small box from grocery store)

2-3 bottles of Spring or Distilled water

Blend it all together starting with the softer ingredients, and drink!

*Will last me all day.

I've Been Osterized!

In preparation for International Green Smoothie Day, I’ve been upping my green smoothie quotient.

This morning was a test.

I’ve always told people that you don’t need a fancy, shmancy blender to do the Green Smoothie Challenge. I’ve always told people that they can just use a cheap $10 Osterizer from a garage sale to do the trick.

But as long as I’ve been a raw foodist, I’ve always had a fancy, shmancy blender. So what did I know? Until, this morning!

I had spotted his Osterizer some time ago and decided that it would be perfect for trying out some kitchen experiments for raw foodists on a budget!

Well stocked with Swiss chard from our little garden plot, and oodles of fresh fruit, this morning I decided it was time to pull out the OSTERIZER!

I loaded it up with:

  • 2 fresh bananas
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 peaches
  • 1/2 cup of Mr. Right’s Tropicana juice. ;-)

If you’re hard core, just add water. I was trying to impress the Prince of Prosciutto, so I sweetened it up with some of his favorite juice!

Then I got this whizzing, whirring, stirring and blending in the old Osterizer until there was a creamy smooth consistency happening. (Honestly, at this point I was already very impressed with the smooth texture.) I was expecting the peel of the peach to be a bit chuncky, but it was smoooth as smoothie gets.

That’s when I started adding the Swiss chard.

I don’t usually add the spine of the leaves. I suppose I added about 5 or 6 big leaves before I called it quits.

I was SHOCKED, AMAZED, IMPRESSED and sooooooo SURPISED that the cheap little Osterizer had pulled off a green smoothie of magnificent smoothness.

Could she have pulverized parsley with the same finesse? I’m not sure.

Could she have done it to grape skins, or think, curly kale? Hard to say.

But this morning’s ingredients were no competition to the persistent little blades of this blender beauty.

I still loooove my Blendtec. I don’t think this little Osterizer could ever pump out almond milk or other concoctions that I’ve come to love with my fancy, shmancy blender. But the proof is definitely in the green pudding this morning:

When you’re starting out on green smoothies

and managing a budget, you definitely,

definitely do NOT need to spend

a fortune on a blender!

P.S.

Aside from the 10 reasons I’ve written before about why I prefer Blendtec, and aside from the fact that Blendtec wins the banana ice cream making competition HANDS DOWN, E V E R Y TIME over other blenders that might attempt to compete against it, the BIGGEST reason I am fiercely loyal to Blendtec is because they have no quarrel with the fact that we tell people they do NOT need to buy a fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.

When International Green Smoothie Day launched last year, we were actually approached by another company who offered to sponsor us. We politely declined when we were told that their sponsorship was conditional upon us removing all traces of garage sale/hardware store blenders from our site and instead telling people that they must buy their fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.

Pshaw!

Money should NOT get in the way of your health!

Here’s a BIG Green Smoothie toast to Blendtec,  and to Osterizer-uses everywhere and here’s to making due with what you’ve got when you’ve got it!

Because grass roots grow, Baby, and you’ve gotta start somewhere.

An Aussie Blender Alternative: Breville Professional Die Cast Blender (Finding the Right Blender for the Job: Green Smoothies)

Breville Professional 800 Collection Die Cast BlenderThis is my beautiful Breville Professional 800 Collection Die Cast Blender. In Australia, a Blendtec costs AU$750 and comes with only a one year warranty. The commercial Blendtec costs approx AU$1500 and also only has a one year warranty. The Kinetix was AU$329 at Harvey Norman, and we bought it for AU$295.

It has a 1500W motor, 2L jug, 2yr parts warranty, 5yr motor warranty. The bottom of the jug is curved like a bowl and it has an extra two blades that curve along this so that foods don’t get caught under the blades. It has three programmes: straight blend, smoothie, ice. There is also an automatic cut-out of 1 to 2 minutes (depending on what you are doing) so if you walk away it won’t just go and go and go!

The blade assembly unscrews to make it easier and safer to clean. It comes with a special tool to loosen the blade assembly if it was put on too tightly.

Some of you may be thinking that $300 is still a lot for a blender, however after burning out two ‘normal’ blenders in less than twelve months we decided that it would be a worthwhile investment.

It is important to have the right tool for the job, and that the tool is a quality one that will do the job properly and last for a good amount of time. When first starting out, it is good to make use of what you have available, however if you are able to save for a good quality blender (juicer, dehydrator - whatever it is you use a lot) then this is well worth the effort.
