Diving into Detoxing the Easy Way!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 by stacey

- by Caitlyn Furness

Some of us are diving into the 6-week detox this week.  This means we are up to our ears in green juices and green smoothies.  Last week was a preparatory week for the detox, and this week is technically week one of the GI (gastro-intestinal) repair phase, which is supposed to last for two weeks.  We’re supposed to drink up to 2 quarts of the green stuff a day, either green juices or green smoothies.  I’m there now, but I had to work my way up to that over the last six months!  When I first started drinking  these, green juices especially, I had to add a lot of apple juice and lemon juice to it, but now, I can do more green juice and less fruit.  In fact, now I can munch dandelion greens straight and I even like them that way!  Don’t worry though, I still have a problem with wheat grass juice!  But thankfully, my favourite green detox drinks are simple to make.

In fact, my point of writing this post is to show how easy it is to make up a smoothie, even when you’re on the go.  Last week, a family member was in the hospital, and I was running back and forth because of it.  I never knew when I’d have to pick up and go in a hurry.  Smoothies and salads were my lifesavers!  I’d make a couple smoothies, put them in my stainless steel bottles (which happen to be bright pink!), and away I’d go with no worries about having food in a hostile hospital environment with take-out food everywhere!

Here’s one of the recipes I was carting around in my pink bottles:

Berry Blaster Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 4 ribs celery
  • 2 giant handfuls kale
  • Small handful dandelion greens
  • 1 T chia seeds
  • 1 T coconut oil

Directions:

Put all the ingredients into your blender and blend (start with the softer ones first if you have a regular blender)!  You might have to do this in batches if you don’t have a high-speed blender.  Of course, you can use fresh bananas and blueberries in place of the frozen, but it’s winter, and this is what I have on hand now.

Enjoy!

It’s Easier Being Green Than You Think!

Hidden Dangers of Green Juice that the Raw Food Advocates Don’t Talk About!

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 by stacey

That’s right.  Matt and Angela aren’t talking about it.  Tera has kept it a secret.  But I’m here today to reveal the dangers of drinking green juice in a white shirt.  And a white sweater.  While driving.  And the car in front of you slams on its brakes…  I’m sure you can see where this is heading.  (To the dry cleaner!)  Yup, I got a big old splash of green juice this morning on my little white shirt dress.  And my sweater sleeve.  And shift stick, and seat, and steering wheel…

I didn’t have any napkins in the car, but I did have a package of those natural hand wipe things.  So, I maneuvered one out and started soaking up the stains, albeit with one hand while driving.  Apparently I slowed down considerably while trying to achieve this because the cars behind me started honking and going around me.  ;-)   By the time I got to work, the stains had faded to yellow, and I blotted out the rest in the sink when I got here.  Good thing my juice didn’t have any wheat grass!

It sucked, but was a gentle humorous reminder of how much things have turned around.  It used to be that I would eat a powdered donut on the way to work in my black clothes and try not to get donut powder on me!  ;) (Unless it was needed in a pinch if I left my compact at home.  Then I would rub a donut on my face.  Haha!  Just kidding…)

I think my internal gravity is off today because after I got to work, I also managed to squirt Ginger Spice lotion onto my shirt, and then when I opened my compact the powder spilled out onto my pants.

However, I’m having a great hair day.  :)  So, I guess 1 out of 4 ain’t bad.

Warm Your Winter Nights!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 by admin

As the nights are drawing in, (it’s dark here by 4:00pm here aaagh!), sometimes the thought of an early evening juice just doesn’t have the same appeal as it does on those fabulous summer evenings.

This recipe looks to remedy this. It is perfect when you feel a little chilly, or in need of a comforting hug as you curl up in front of the fire. The addition of cinnamon really transforms a simple smoothie to complete other level.

Winter Punch Smoothie

Juice:

2 apples

1 carrot

2 oranges, peeled

½ lemon with skin

Transfer to blender and add:

Cinnamon to taste (I used 2 sticks – but then I’m a mega cinnamon fan!)

1 banana

Handful of spinach (add more if you wish)

And blend!!!

This is absolutely fabulous as it is really comforting on cold winter nights. Enjoy!

carrotsCarrots aren’t just good for Bugs Bunny to munch on! Or just for giving your smoothies an orange color! They are also an excellent vegetable, having both nutritional and medicinal values which are essential for our optimum health.

They contain a very complete nutrition to provide our body with essential enzymes, vitamins and minerals. A single carrot will supply all your vitamin A needs for the whole day. In fact, Chinese medical practitioners recommend eating carrots to give your liver more energy!

Carrot Juice is an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.  Carrots are also rich in biotin, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and sodium. They also offer an excellent source of beta-carotene which is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that has been reported to positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including:

•    Balancing blood acidity and blood sugar.
•    Detoxifying the liver and reducing toxicity in the body
•    Reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing deposits in the arteries
•    Providing protection from infection for the respiratory system
•    Reducing the risk of cancer
•    Lowering cholesterol levels
•    Easing nasal congestion
•    Regulating problems with chronic constipation
•    Keeping the optic system in good condition – we’ve all heard that carrots help you see in the dark!
•    Reducing inflammation and easing arthritis and rheumatism
•    Building the immune system
•    Nourishing the skin and helping to prevent psoriasis and acne
Chinese practitioners have said that carrots taste sweet, and are good for the health of spleen and stomach.

The best thing about carrots is that they are easily assimilated by our body, especially when blended or juiced, to break down the cell walls.

So try adding carrots to your juices and smoothies, enjoy their colour and taste, and relish the fact that you are nourishing your body optimally at the same time!

A Sunshine Smoothie!!!

I’m just loving playing around with my juicer and blender at the moment, creating fabulously delicious smoothies from my juices, which makes them more filling and sustaining at a time of year when our bodies need more nourishment. This morning I was woken by howling winds and rain pounding on the windows – not a good start to the day! I’m seriously craving sunshine; not just for its warmth, but also its colour. This provided the inspiration for today’s juice/smoothie recipes.

Warming Sunshine Juice

4 carrots

2 oranges

2cm of fresh ginger (or more if you’re craving extra warmth!)

Juice all ingredients and savour – a beautiful orange colour with warmth provided by the ginger!

Warming Sunshine Smoothie

Take the juice above and blend with

lisawarmingsmoothie

2 bananas

2 sharon fruit

Eat with a spoon from your favourite glass, and dream of sunshine!

Warming Green Sunshine Smoothie

Take the smoothie above and blend with a large handful of your favourite greens – I used spinach.

Top with some of the leftover juice for a fancier appearance, and to retain some of that summer glow! Reminds me of summer sun over green fields!

Curl up and enjoy! Mmmmm!

Purple Passion Smoothie! Who said anything about green?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009 by admin

beetsI am just loving beetroot at the moment, and have come up with a super recipe for beet smoothie, which not only has great liver cleansing powers, it’s also my favourite colour….Purple!

The liver is the largest gland in the human body and is responsible for several functions which keep our bodies in good health including the production of bile. A healthy liver can benefit all parts of the body and so if it doesn’t function properly, the body can’t function at peak capacity either. My liver has taken a bit of a battering of late and I can feel that my body isn’t performing at its optimum level so it’s time to I did something to redress this situation. NOW!

Beetroot is one of the few vegetables which you can enjoy both their roots and leaves. Studies have shown that beetroots can help to protect liver cells from harmful chemicals as they contain the compound betacyanin – the red pigment which is found in beetroot. This pigment provides the body with powerful antioxidant protection. Beetroot is also rich in folate, a water soluble B vitamin which is important for a healthy heart and is also essential for the growth of tissues in the body. The red pigment in beetroot helps to raise the antioxidant enzyme levels in the liver and may also promote detoxification in the intestines, blood and liver.

Beet greens are also delicious and are rich in vitamins and minerals. They contain almost twice the potassium of the beetroot, as well as high levels of folic acid.

My Purple Passion Smoothie contains both beetroot and its leaves and is a gorgeous rich purple colour which fills you with that feel good factor!

Simply juice:

  • a small beetroot
  • a handful of beet green leaves
  • a handful of spinach
  • ½ cucumber
  • 1 large carrot
  • 2 sticks of celery
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 apples

Then transfer the juice to your blender and blend with 2 bananas and extra spinach if desired. Pour into an elegant wine glass and savour – purple bliss!!!!lisa-purple-passion-pic

This is an excellent smoothie for those sceptical about the appearance of green smoothies, as the intense purple of the beetroot predominates and the greens are cleverly hidden!

Green Enough? (How to get enough greens!)

Monday, September 21st, 2009 by admin

by Joanna L Steven

greensmoothieEveryone knows that leafy greens are important, but often, we don’t really know why they are, we’re not sure which greens are best, and we wonder how much of them we should eat on any given day. Standard American Dieters often try to have a daily salad, but it’s often a fairly small one that is generally drowned in store-bought dressings made with soybean oil (one of the most genetically modified crop in the US), cottonseed oil (a very pesticide heavy crop), white sugar, artificial colorings etc. and iceberg lettuce is a SAD favorite.

In the raw food movement, leafy greens are one food group everyone usually agrees on. Those who follow a low fat diet like 80-10-10 know to eat a whole pound of lettuce everyday, while those who follow a higher fat diet such as Brendan Brazier’s put dark green leafies at the bottom of their food pyramid. Likewise, adepts of blending like to consume large amounts of green smoothies, and proponents of juicing consider green juices to be indispensable to good health.

Why are leafy greens so important?

Fruits are usually very low in minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium etc, and while nuts are often mineral-rich, they are also high in fat. Leafy greens are very high in many minerals, and very low in calories. They are a great way to get all the minerals we need without overdoing it on fatty acids.
Greens are also, of course, a great source of chlorophyll. Many people notice that with higher intakes of chlorophyll, their skin glows and becomes healthier. Chlorophyll is also thought to be a great blood detoxifier.
Rotating your leafy greens is important. Romaine lettuce is high in folate, but parsley is high in iron. Kale is high in calcium, while Swiss chard is high in magnesium. The list goes on.

How can we eat enough greens?

Here are the best ways I have found to eat massive quantities of greens and enjoy every bite. I personally think that eating at least a pound of greens a day is optimal, but even small amounts are better than nothing.

Juice Your Greens

wheatgrass2Green juices don’t have to mean shots of wheatgrass. They can be delectable when made properly, and they are quick to make, too. For green juices to be palatable, you need to add the secret ingredient: fresh lemon juice. Lemon juice will take away the green taste and add a refreshing lemonade like flavor to the juice. Adding a little spiciness with ginger juice will make your green juice even better. By drinking 30 ounces of green juice a day, you can consume a whole head of lettuce on average without even noticing it! Don’t forget to add dark leafies such as kale.

Blend Your Greens

If you don’t think you are ready for green juices, start with green smoothies. Green smoothies are fruit smoothies, but with leafy greens sneaked into them. If you blend dark, sweet fruits such as berries, you can get away with adding several ounces of spinach without being able to detect any greenness. Green smoothies are a great way to eat a lot of swiss chard, too. My husband did not like green smoothies much at first, but now he loves them. I make sure to always include sweet fruits, and vary the greens.

Try New, Exciting Salad Dressings

780106_garden_veggiesPeople on the SAD (standard American diet) often equate salads with boring. Growing up in Europe where bottled salad dressings are hard to come by, I had to learn to make my own. Try your hand at new recipes such as sweet dressings with mangoes, or spicy dressings with mustard, or even fat free dressings with blended tomatoes and fresh herbs! When I don’t have time to make an exotic dressing, I simply mix olive oil and raw apple cider vinegar at a 2:1 ratio, add a pinch of sea salt, a little mustard, and sometimes a little crushed garlic.

Vary Your Salad Ingredients

581574_lettuce_leaf_2When I eat out at restaurants, I’m often disappointed by the salad selection. You can make large, delicious and satisfying salads without having to resort to the traditional iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tomato. Try layering lettuce with peeled citrus fruits and avocado, or tossing spinach with strawberries! Try different greens, such as arugula (also called roquette) with fresh mushrooms. The possibilities are endless.

Marinate Your Greens

There are many types of greens that people shy away from, or wouldn’t eat unless they’ve been sauteed. Did you know that marinating your greens will reduce their size dramatically, and soften them as if they were cooked? I was never a big fan of kale salads until I started marinating them. Simply massage the leaves for a few minutes with olive oil and a little salt, and see them wilt down. Then, toss them with pine nuts, dry cranberries, and a sweet raspberry dressing, and you’ve got yourself a meal!

Green Smoothie Revival: Day One: Get Your Green On!

Monday, May 11th, 2009 by admin

I admit that my day is off to a spectacular start. The sun has finally broken through after a week of clouds and rain and I dare say, my lovelies, that good things are brewing in the world. It’s probably no coincidence that the sun is shining down on us as we kick off a 3-Day Green Smoothie Revival.

Since I’ve been grooving along as part of the 90-Day Detox and am also enrolled in the 6-Week Detox with Dr. Ritamarie, I will be skipping the fiber on this round of green smoothies and going for a juicier adventure. Those of you who follow the Raw Diva blog know that I’m also trying to get rid of a cyst that developed on the back of my leg and I think this is just the thing to do it!

Today is Day One! The day your commitment feels solid. You’re ready and on track. You can do this good thing and you WANT to do it for yourself. Stay focused and think Green Thoughts and you’ll get through this day victorious.

Remember to eat enough, so you don’t find yourself giving into temptation at the end of the day.

Remember to get to bed at a good time. Fatique is a major reason for late night eating. Don’t get caught in the late night snack trap! If you’re going to do this 3-day adventure with us, give yourself the best chance possible of feeling fantastic. Go for some exercise, too! Break a sweat and release some of those toxins that have been dragging you down!

And hold fast to your commitment to yourself for the next three days NO MATTER what comes up. BEND, but don’t break your desire and need to prioritize your health right now.

Tonight I was invited out for dinner.

I’m sure you can imagine my predicament. Invited out for dinner on the first day of my Green Smoothie/Juice Revival?!!

Guess what I did? C’mon! Guess!!!

I ACCEPTED!

Yup! And I suggested bringing over a whole slew of fresh fruits and vegetables so that we can all make juice together. Now isn’t that a great idea? Last night we had a teleseminar scheduled with Angela Elliott of www.she-zencuisine.com. It was to discuss some of the tips and tricks for raw foodists who are living in cooked food families. There’s a part of me that really dislikes these labels, because it’s really about prioritizing the foods that build and support us rather than the foods that cause us to feel unwell. Not all “raw” food is good for you and not all “cooked” food is “bad”–just wanted to make that clear.

There’s no question that it can be tough when we make an unusually disciplined commitment to health and find ourselves surrounded by other people who do not share or necessarily understand these commitments. I know I’m not the only one guilty of compromising my intentions in the name of social graces. I know I’m not the only one who has failed at achieving my goals for myself because I “gave in” to the environment around me.

But listening to Angela last night I was reminded of the importance of clarity in our decisions. She hasn’t dipped a finger in cooked food since the day she decided to embark on the raw food path. It’s not a burden for her. It’s not a challenge or a complication. It’s a PLEASURE. She LOOOVEs the way she lives and eats and even though she cooks for her family every day, she’s inspired to pursue her goals for health without compromise.

That’s inspirational.

Our social situations cannot be an excuse for us to hold back on prioritizing our health. We get caught in a trap of justifications and excuses about “why it’s so hard” but the bottom line is there needs to be a DECISION to do what you need and want to do for yourself. When you have that, everything else can and will fall in place effortlessly.

DECIDE today that you’re going to get through this day of Green Smoothies.

DECIDE that you want to feel better than you’ve ever felt before and that you DO deserve to feel that way.

DECIDE that you matter and that your needs are worth prioritizing over certain social graces.

There are ways to get around sticky situations, but when you inherently have an apologetic attitude about what you’re doing–if you feel from the start that you’re an inconvenience or a burden, if you’re frustrated about the “toxic choices” of others then you’re busy toxifying yourself with negative emotions rather than embracing the image of where you want to be and moving towards that.

So today is your day! Buck up and smile at the world! Be the bearer of good tidings, bright colors and health!

Get your green on!

Love and hugs,

Tera

A Fun Day in the Kitchen with Connor (Kale, Carrots, Yellow Beets, Apple, Celery, Lemon)

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 by stacey

Connor feeding veggies into juicerToday as I started to make a green smoothie, my son Connor yelled out, “Mommy, Juice?” This is his way of saying that he wanted to make juice in the juicer. I absolutely love creating delicious tasting juice from a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, but every time I pull out the juicer, Connor wants to help. This is great, but when the bowl of fruit and veggies is empty, he doesn’t understand this and for the next 30 minutes or so, he just throws a tantrum.

Connor just loves his role of placing the cut up fruit and veggies into the juicer and using the pusher to make the delicious tasting green juice. My husband and I get a kick out of how excited he is and how he takes his job really serious.

Before Connor was born I read all of the books on good nutrition for children, but I have to admit that the best lesson I have learned is to get children involved in the kitchen.

Green Juice RecipeConnor and the Juicer

  • One large bunch kale
  • Four carrots
  • One half yellow beet
  • Three Fuji apples
  • Two celery ribs
  • One half lemon

Juice and enjoy!

Connor enjoying his juice*If you don’t have a juicer on hand you can use your blender to blend all of your produce and then you can strain it through a nut milk bag or any very fine strainer (if you’re in a hurry check your hardware or paint store for a paint straining bag).
