Beet Greens and Baby Spinach: Recipes from the 3-Day Green Smoothie Challenge

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 by stacey

banangoberry blast green smoothieMy name is Tanya and I read about the Green Smoothie Queen for the first time on the Raw Diva’s website.

Now I have to say I was more sucessful with the 3 day challenge than with the first challenge I with the Raw Diva 7-day detox I did.  (heheh… Unfortunately I had a few slip ups my first time around, but it got things in motion!)  It has been an interesting process incorporating more raw foods and yummy green smoothies into my diet.

My boys (5 and 3) are very accepting and willing to try the smoothies (even the not so tasty ones).  Even my husband has also joined me on my journey, so I am very excited that this may work!   Since the Raw Diva challenge three weeks ago,  I have planted a garden for fresh produce and I’m making small changes daily.  I know myself and if I go totally whole banana, I (more…)

PCOS Healing through Whole Foods in the 21 Day Green Smoothie Detox

I have suffered from PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) for several years and initially treated my symptoms with medication.  I quickly found out that  medication was not the answer to alleviate my symptoms.  The side effects were horrific.

PCOS is an endocrine disorder characterized by hirsutism (excessive hair growth on face, chest, toes, back, etc), male-pattern baldness, horomone imbalance, excessive weight gain, high level of male androgens, carb cravings, acne, infertility, mood swings, and irregular cycles to name a few.  I also have a gluten allergy, irritable bowel, low stomach acid and cannot digest foods properly to get the proper nourishment from my foods.  Due to this, I have several food allergies.

I try to detox several times a year because this condition (more…)

Hail to the Kale!

dinosaur kale - green smoothies and vegan options

Okay, perhaps “Hail to the Kale” is an insipid title for an article.  Let’s face it; kale is a hard word to rhyme.  But, it’s better than the title I first came up with:  “If kale had a degree, it’d be from Yale.”

I guess what my feeble attempts at a clever title are trying to achieve is to convey kale’s amazing qualities.  And, yes, a vegetable can be amazing.  Particularly when it’s loaded with substances that can help protect one from cancer, cataracts, emphysema, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Kale is not particularly a staple in most American households, but, after reading this article, I hope kale becomes a staple in your house.  Some may consider kale bitter, and, admittedly, some varieties of kale are on the bitter side.   The secret to eating kale, then, is to (more…)

health failure

Tracy is one of our 21-Day Green Smoothie Detox program participants.  She, like many of you, is constantly dealing with the health concerns of her family.  She agreed to share her journey with us with the hope it will also be of help to someone else!

Tracy reached that point that many of us do.  She gave up.  Find out what got her back on her journey and discovering success again!  Her story is a great reminder of the gentle steps and support we all need to seek out.

Welcome to my Australian family! I have three beautiful children and a gorgeous husband. We decided to have our children close together (15 months apart) so that they could grow and play well together. Some people are very quick to say “You were keen,” or “They are close.”  Yes, there have been some crazy times, but it has been well worth it. (more…)

GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder): Move and Improve!

GERD - fitness fire extinguisherPeople who suffer from gastro esophageal reflux disorder [GERD] (typically involving symptoms of chronic acid reflux or heartburn) can enjoy and improve their situation with moderate exercise. A study conducted by ‘GUT’, the gastroenterology journal, found that people who took part in physical exercise had fewer symptoms than those who refrained from movement.

Regular exercise is probably the most effective method to keep your weight at its healthiest range and may assist in controlling the GERD symptoms. The American Journal of Gastroenterology reported that excess body weight increased the risk of GERD symptoms. Also noted in the research was that obese people; those with a body mass index [BMI] of 30 or more, experienced GERD symptoms 2.5 times greater than those with a healthier BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9. The same research indicated that those with an obese BMI were also three times more inclined to esophageal cancer than those with the healthier body weight. (more…)

spinach - history nutrition benefits

Green history of spinach

Spinach, the Queen of the garden patch, is an original vegetable of the East and many believe its origins to be from Persia. Spinach grew wild in Europe, where it was appreciated for its medicinal characteristics; however, it was the Arabs who introduced the cultivation of spinach in Europe around 1000 BC. (more…)

Dandelions: A Dandy of a Weed!

dandelions - health benefits

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have yet been discovered.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

I don’t have to explain the bad reputation that dandelion has as a persistent weed. I was shocked myself to learn of the benefits of dandelion when I began to study herbs. This healing medicinal herb dates back 1,000 years.

Dandelion is in the Compositae family along with the daisy, echinacea, and marigold. It’s also known as lion’s tooth, wild endive, and piss-abed .

The Doctrine of Signatures, which says that a plant’s physical characteristics reveals their healing values, was first noted in the middles ages and is still believed today by many. Under this doctrine, anything yellow was linked to the liver’s bile and considered a liver remedy. This is proven to be correct as two German studies have shown that (more…)

Bee Alert: Why The Lifestyle You Love and Live Is Disappearing

bees - the impact on our food
Sitting in the garden in the warm sun, drowsily listening to the hum of bees buzzing around the lavender flowers…that’s my idea of a perfect way to spend a summer day.

But it’s an idea that’s threatened.   And it’s not just the tranquility of a moment that’s at stake.

I read an alarming article in the Guardian online this morning about the declining population of bees. Apparently for the fourth year in a row, more than a third of bee colonies in the USA have failed to survive the winter. One of the reasons scientists think is causing the problem (and it seems obvious to me) is the indiscriminating use of pesticides. The article states: (more…)
