365 Days of Green Smoothies With Jessica - February Update

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 by stacey

The Green Smoothie Queen

I think it’s time for a little inspiration this marvelous Monday morning!  In January, I was thrilled to introduce you to Jessica Mauk.  Jessica is a green gal after my own leafy heart.  She’s really stepping up to the plate this year and is taking on 365 days of green smoothies!

Each month, she’s going to share with us a little update about her progress and what she’s learned, so here to tell you more is the fearless chlorophyll challenger herself.  And if you like the idea of green smoothies, but just can’t see yourself doing 365 days just yet, then perhaps our upcoming 10-Day Challenge will be more to your liking!  It’s a live challenge starting on St. Patrick’s Day, so order yourself a green jug now and get ready to chug down some shamrocks!

- by Jessica Mauk

jessica mauk 365 green smoothie challengerHello everyone!  I now have two months under my belt in my 365 days of smoothies challenge.  I can not wait for spring to hit as I’m getting a little tired of frozen fruit and I’m longing for all of those luxurious greens that are so abundant at our local farmer’s market each year.

So, in addition to this new supply of energy that I’ve found, what are a few things that I’ve learned or noticed in my two months of drinking a quart a day?  My fingernails are growing like weeds, green weeds!  I’ve never had strong or long nails in my life.  They always split and tear as soon as they eek out just slightly above my fingertip.  Now, I actually have to file them back a bit.  I’ve also noticed that if I drink a green smoothie about an hour or so before bedtime I sleep so much more soundly and I wake up refreshed and ready to tackle my day.  I can honestly say, after only two months of my challenge I will never go back to a S.A.D again.

I have found heaven on earth and it’s green!

Green Smoothie Valentine - Day 5 - Light of My Life Smoothie

Friday, February 12th, 2010 by stacey

I’m starting to think that every week should be a countdown to Valentine’s Day.  Pampering, beauty, relaxation…

And healthy, yummy green smoothies…

This is my kinda holiday…

- by Kate Nicholson

Treat yourself to a candlelit bubble bath tonight. Take a glass of sparkling water with a slice of lemon into the bath with you. Slap on a face mask. I have a friend who swears by honey. She simply rubs a spoonful of the stuff over her face, avoiding the eyes and mouth areas, leaves for a short while, and then rinses off. She has a radiant, even complexion. Add a couple of cucumber slices over your eyes, and you’ll look good enough to eat!

Day 5

From a sunbeam to the bounce in your step…

Light of my Life Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 - 3 peaches
  • chunk of cucumber, peeled if not organic
  • 1 stick of celery

Directions:

Blend with water.  Enjoy a peachy day!

The Queen’s on Facebook!

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 by stacey

I gotta tell ya, I’m pretty excited.  January has been such a blast so far.  My Green Team has been helping me around the site, behind the scenes, and working to put together some delicious improvements for all of you who benefit from the information we share.

I’m going to have an announcement for you quite soon about a new FREE program we’ll be offering.  Each day I check in with my guys and gals to see how things are coming and each time I do, I get more excited.  This is a program I want everyone to try!  You see, I believe that the more people I can tell about green smoothies, the more my dreams of helping people to become well through their own wisdom and action seem within reach.

And you know, this really is the sort of health information that’s most successful when it’s passed on from person to person.   Someone told me about green smoothies, now here I am!  So… I got to thinking (do you smell green smoke too??), why not ‘get with the times’ and use the social networking tools that are available?

So I got me a profile!!  Ain’t it purty?

Diving into Detoxing the Easy Way!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 by stacey

- by Caitlyn Furness

Some of us are diving into the 6-week detox this week.  This means we are up to our ears in green juices and green smoothies.  Last week was a preparatory week for the detox, and this week is technically week one of the GI (gastro-intestinal) repair phase, which is supposed to last for two weeks.  We’re supposed to drink up to 2 quarts of the green stuff a day, either green juices or green smoothies.  I’m there now, but I had to work my way up to that over the last six months!  When I first started drinking  these, green juices especially, I had to add a lot of apple juice and lemon juice to it, but now, I can do more green juice and less fruit.  In fact, now I can munch dandelion greens straight and I even like them that way!  Don’t worry though, I still have a problem with wheat grass juice!  But thankfully, my favourite green detox drinks are simple to make.

In fact, my point of writing this post is to show how easy it is to make up a smoothie, even when you’re on the go.  Last week, a family member was in the hospital, and I was running back and forth because of it.  I never knew when I’d have to pick up and go in a hurry.  Smoothies and salads were my lifesavers!  I’d make a couple smoothies, put them in my stainless steel bottles (which happen to be bright pink!), and away I’d go with no worries about having food in a hostile hospital environment with take-out food everywhere!

Here’s one of the recipes I was carting around in my pink bottles:

Berry Blaster Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 4 ribs celery
  • 2 giant handfuls kale
  • Small handful dandelion greens
  • 1 T chia seeds
  • 1 T coconut oil

Directions:

Put all the ingredients into your blender and blend (start with the softer ones first if you have a regular blender)!  You might have to do this in batches if you don’t have a high-speed blender.  Of course, you can use fresh bananas and blueberries in place of the frozen, but it’s winter, and this is what I have on hand now.

Enjoy!

It’s Easier Being Green Than You Think!

Merry Mustaches! And the Winners are…

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Well… the tree is finally down, my Christmas lights have resumed the tangled wad that I believe is their natural state (”Why can’t I just hang THIS?” I hear myself saying next year!), and the New Year is off to a running start!  …I figure I should have my laces tied by February.  ;-)

And how are you? Still keen on chlorophyll?  Still gushing with greens?  Or….maybe not so much?

THIS makes me smile!

THIS makes me smile!

That’s okay!  No matter what, here you are accepted and encouraged and surrounded by others who have gone through the same successes and frustrations.  You can decide that just for today, you can do one thing… maybe even one weeeee little thing… to make this day better than yesterday.  Even if you just find something to smile about.  Hmmmm…..

And speaking of smiles!!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

December was all about our 24-Day live Countdown to Christmas program.  We had green guzzlers, smoothie sippers, tabby tasters and juice junkies unite to enjoy a very verdant holiday!  We made ourselves accountable to one another, we shared recipes, we told stories, we threw fluffy snowballs, and we took pictures of our smiling green smoothie mustaches!  All in the name of fun and healthy holiday!

Communities of cutie-pies!

Communities of cutie-pies!

In January and February we’ll be cleaning up and tidying our programs after the holidays, doing a little detoxing, thinking about our wishes for the New Year, and planning for our next live challenge leading up to St. Patty’s Day in March!  And I’m going to see what I need to do to get you to send in more photos my dears!  We really believe that one needs a community to make real changes, and if you’re like me, you like to *see* who’s in your community and how they’re doing!  So send me (thequeen@greensmoothiequeen.com) your snapshots of your green smoothie adventures!  We’d be happy to share them on our blog and our e-zine!  I’ve also got plans for a green gallery too!

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

But, in the meantime and as promised, we selected three photos from our submitted Christmas entries.  We’ve contacted our three winners, we’ve contacted their stores, and we’ll soon be sending three radiant, happy people on green smoothie shopping sprees at their local market!  Sweeeeeet!  Me, my royal self, and I just love spreading around more smiles!  Just when you thought the presents were over!

Now…

Without further ado…  (though I am rather fond of further ado!)

Our three favourite green smoothie mustaches (in no particular order) were:

The lovely young Willow!

Awwwwww #1

Awwwwww #1

The bouncing baby Broden

Yaaaay! #2

Yaaaay! #2

And the raw-star Roxanne!

Glorious #3

Glorious #3

In addition to the bonuses, books, and recipes, all of the people who signed up for the countdown received access to our sparkly new Emerald Lounge (and you can too when you sign up for one of our programs!) and a whack of delicious new and original recipes submitted by our creative countdowners.  You’ll definitely want to take part in our next live event!

Until then, this queen is gonna get her royal feather duster kicked into high gear and do some cleaning, inside and out!

I’ll be looking for you with smiling Irish eyes come March!

Kate’s Christmas Cure-All!

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 by stacey

- by Kate Nicholson

Well, I managed to negotiate Christmas fairly successfully. Not 100% raw, but high raw and vegan. No sugar or alcohol (don’t need either to have a fun time anymore!). I offered round Doll’s delicious ‘cocoa surprises’ from her ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ cookie recipes after dinner. (Thank you so much for those, Doll!). Much dubiousness initially from all of the non-raw brigade (especially the men), which changed to exclamations of delight after a bite! They polished off the lot. Ha!

Next day, when everyone emerged at breakfast time slightly hung-over and groaning at all the rich food they’d consumed, I offered green smoothies all round. Amazingly, they all (from the 93-year old down to the 8-year old) agreed to try them.

The concoction I whizzed up was designed to be cleansing, refreshing, and energising.

Greenberry Delight!

Serves One. Increase amounts according to numbers.

  • 1 generous cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 large banana
  • 3/4 cup parsley
  • ½ cup kale (stripped from stem)
  • splash of Agave
  • 1 heaped tsp spirulina

The frozen strawberries give a delicious juicy coolness; they’re packed with vitamin C and potent antioxidants such as the anthocyanins which give them their rich red colour and which help to protect cell structures and prevent oxygen damage in the body. They are also anti-inflammatory (excellent for my sugar eating folks) and protective against certain cancers.

Good old bananas provide a great source of energy which got my flagging family off the sofa and out into the countryside for a good long walk. (Not the 93-year old. My smoothies aren’t quite that magical!). They also provide the mood boosting amino acid tryptophan and have a natural antacid effect on the stomach to counteract the acidity caused by a glut of rich foods. Their high levels of potassium are beneficial for lowering raised blood-pressure, while their generous levels of B vitamins improve nerve function.

Parsley contains volatile oils which have been shown to inhibit tumour formation in animal studies and is a rich source of vitamin C and vitamin A. It is high in antioxidants and is considered an effective blood cleanser, dissolving sticky deposits in the veins and maintaining the elasticity of the blood vessels. Parsley is also excellent for cleansing the breath! (Good for my cigarette smoking brother-in-law).

Kale, a member of the brassica family, is another cancer preventative due to its sulphur-containing phyto-nutrients, such as sulforaphane, which boosts the body’s detoxification enzymes. Sulforaphane is formed when cruciferous vegetables such as kale are chopped, chewed, or blended. Kale is also well known for its carotenoids which protect the eyes from developing cataracts. In addition to its many other benefits, Kale provides a good dose of calcium.

Agave, although not raw, is a useful natural sweetener for its low impact on blood sugar and the saponins it contains which have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.

The fresh water algae Spirulina is an excellent source of chlorophyll (anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing, it helps in growth and repair of tissues and neutralises free-radicals. It is also destroyed by cooking, so keep drinking those greens!).

Well, my family have all vowed to eat more raw food and try to get green smoothies into their diets on a regular basis. I intend to make sure this is one New Year resolution they all stick to!

Happy Holidays!!

Monday, December 28th, 2009 by stacey

Welcome back green smoothie goers!  We hope you had a splendid holiday with friends and loved ones.  As you get ready to celebrate the New Year, we’d like to share a very special poem from one of our green smoothie program participants!

A Thank You From Mrs. Claus

- by Rena Reason

T’was Christmas day and the North Pole was humming
With laughter and song and dancing and drumming,
The elves were gleefully at play in the snow,
And the reindeer were frolicking to and fro.

Since Santa had traveled the world far and wide,
He settled in his rocker, a bit sleepy eyed,
But thanks to Green Smoothie Queen, I hurried to the kitchen,
Got out my blender and knew what to mix in,
Then handed Santa a green jug and said “Sip on this!
It’s full of flavor, nutrition, and bliss!”

Said Santa, “It’s sweet like candy cane, and as green as a Christmas tree!
It’s bliss to my lips, yummy to my tummy, and gives me great energy!
This beverage gives such leverage, Ho, Ho, Ho, I feel so alive!
I could sing out Christmas jingles and dance the Jive!”

These groovy Green Smoothies are quite a sensation,
Let’s get the word out all over the nation,
Milk and baked cookies are things of the past,
Green Smoothies are the real elixir at last!

Thank you your Majesty, Green Smoothie Queen,
for showing me how to blend fruits and greens!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good year,
Let’s drink to our Health with Green Smoothies and Cheers!

Busting the Christmas Cravings!

Monday, December 21st, 2009 by stacey

Looking at the greens in your fridge and not sure you’re up for a full-throttle garden glory, but not wanting to resort to cooked food either?  Kate has your solution!

- by Kate N.

You know those days when you wake up craving something sweet and decadent? Well, that happened to me this morning. Work has been so insanely busy over the last two days, I’d gotten home too late to get to the shops to stock up on yummy fruits and veggies. I wandered into the kitchen this morning to be greeted by a mountain of chocolate cookies and cakes my sister had brought over the night before. All that remained in ‘my’ corner of the kitchen was one solitary avocado…Was I tempted by the cooked food? No! Thanks to the lessons I’ve learned on my BES journey, I rolled up my sleeves and got creative.

Here’s what I made:

Chocolate Heaven Smoothie

1 avocado
handful of mint leaves
some frozen cherries
nut mylk  (small amount for a thick ‘dessert’ type smoothie, more for a liquid one)
raw cacao powder (about 2 heaped tsp or to taste)
1-2 Tbsp Agave or 1 tsp raw honey

Blend and enjoy!

The avocado provides a good dose of lutein, which helps to maintain healthy eyesight. It’s also rich in potassium, vitamins B, E, and K and a good source of monounsaturated fat (giving the smoothie a wonderful creamy texture).

Cherries are rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and folate; one study (by the University of Michigan), suggests that they are good for fat loss, particularly belly-fat.

The mint aids digestion, while the cacao offers an abundance of health-giving nutrients - antioxidants, flavonoids, catechins and above all, the wonderful mood-enhancing theobromine, making you feel all loved up and happy!

P.S. - If the sight of shortbread and cookies is still making you vibrate, then you may need some heavy duty craving cullers.  Right now, you can take advantage of The Raw Divas Cravings and Emotional Eating Program for a third of the regular price!

Green Smoothies and Holiday Travelling - Part 3 of 3

Friday, December 18th, 2009 by stacey

by Stacey Terry

As I’ve discovered, drinking green smoothies through the holidays IS possible.  But the best intentions and the best blenders in the world don’t mean much without nutritious food!  Thus…

TRAVEL CHOICE #3:

I know which fruits and greens I’ll have access to once I’m at my destination and what I may need to bring and/or buy.  My goal: make choices that are simple, yummy, and that require minimal effort.

Just as most people have blenders kickin’ around somewhere, many people have bananas and romaine lettuce.  Now if bananas and romaine are nutritional improvements for you, then I’d say hooray - you’re good to go for a few days!  If not, you may want to see what’s close by for grocery stores and have an idea of how to drive to them.  Thankfully my parents now stock up more on the things they’ve seen me use in smoothies (though… I have yet to see her come home with seaweed of any kind).  Still, I do tend to have less variety when I travel.  My smoothies are often bananas and spinach or bananas and mixed greens.  Yes, variety is better, but if finding kale is difficult or if my mother, in her sincere efforts to be helpful, is going to stress out about “having something already” for me and looking in the store for persimm-a-somethings, then I will choose to be simple for a few days.  The “it’s still better than a cheeseburger” mantra gets me through any worries.

I’ve even frozen some of my smoothies if I know there are going to be days where I just can’t get to the blender to make a fresh one.  Is it perfect?  No sirreee-bob.  But, and say it with me, “it’s still better than a cheeseburger.”

Chances are, if you keep your smoothies simple, your non-green friends and family may actually be willing to give one of your smoothies a taste test.  Once they see for themselves how yummy they are, you may have opened the door a crack for them to make their own health improvements.

That’s all we’re trying to do really…  Make improvements…  Enjoy a better quality of life and health.  It does take a little planning and creativity, but it’s possible… and you can even make it fun!  (You OPTION 2 people know who you are!) Every time I’m out of my home environment, and I hear those magic “What is THAT?” words, I grin… because now I have an opportunity to share what I’ve learned.

And as you enjoy and get ready for your holidays, I hope you’ve found some useful thinking and tools over the last few days.  A very Merry Christmas to you and to The Green Smoothie Queen!  I look forward to catching up with you in The Emerald Lounge in the New Year!
