365 Days of Green Smoothies With Jessica - February Update

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 by stacey

The Green Smoothie Queen

I think it’s time for a little inspiration this marvelous Monday morning!  In January, I was thrilled to introduce you to Jessica Mauk.  Jessica is a green gal after my own leafy heart.  She’s really stepping up to the plate this year and is taking on 365 days of green smoothies!

Each month, she’s going to share with us a little update about her progress and what she’s learned, so here to tell you more is the fearless chlorophyll challenger herself.  And if you like the idea of green smoothies, but just can’t see yourself doing 365 days just yet, then perhaps our upcoming 10-Day Challenge will be more to your liking!  It’s a live challenge starting on St. Patrick’s Day, so order yourself a green jug now and get ready to chug down some shamrocks!

- by Jessica Mauk

jessica mauk 365 green smoothie challengerHello everyone!  I now have two months under my belt in my 365 days of smoothies challenge.  I can not wait for spring to hit as I’m getting a little tired of frozen fruit and I’m longing for all of those luxurious greens that are so abundant at our local farmer’s market each year.

So, in addition to this new supply of energy that I’ve found, what are a few things that I’ve learned or noticed in my two months of drinking a quart a day?  My fingernails are growing like weeds, green weeds!  I’ve never had strong or long nails in my life.  They always split and tear as soon as they eek out just slightly above my fingertip.  Now, I actually have to file them back a bit.  I’ve also noticed that if I drink a green smoothie about an hour or so before bedtime I sleep so much more soundly and I wake up refreshed and ready to tackle my day.  I can honestly say, after only two months of my challenge I will never go back to a S.A.D again.

I have found heaven on earth and it’s green!

Buzz from The Emerald Lounge

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by stacey

I love it!

I love it!

I LOVE IT!

I just returned from our Green Smoothie online community, The Emerald Lounge (all you need to do to become a member is take one of our programs, including the FREE one below), and was looking to see how our participants in the FREE 3-Day Green Smoothie Mini-Course are doing.  As I mentioned to them in the lounge, it’s so wonderful to see carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and raw foodists all getting along and supporting one another to eat more greens.

We are all at different stages of health and different levels of comfort with making improvements, but here we are… all agreeing that adding more greens (and this is a relative measurement) is a fun and delicious adventure! Some are here to get healthy, some are here to improve health conditions, some want more energy, and many are here to lose weight.  I see so many “stuck-in-a-rut”s and “fell-off-the-wagon”s and “banging-my-head-against-a-wall”s in there.  We’re all so very, very human.  We slide, we give up for awhile, we do things we know we shouldn’t.  Some people are just looking for a kind ole kick in the pants!!

I can trade high heels for boots if I have to!!  But really…the best kick I can give you is to remind you that it all starts with love and self-worth. It’s hard to make improvements  for yourself when all your energy goes into beating yourself up for the things you don’t do.  You only have so much energy each day… how will you choose to use it?  By listening to the voice that knocks you down and makes you feel guilty, or by just going to the fridge and grabbing that bundle of soon-to-be-blended green joy?

I’m so flattered that we have such a keen group of greenies!  Thank you for sending in your stories and goals.  And I hope you’ll stay with us for more green smoothie adventures!

Happy Day 2!

LIVE Green Smoothie Programs - JOIN NOW!

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 by stacey

January was jumping with activity here in the land of green smoothies, and my Green Team slugged countless jugs of green energy to get two LIVE green smoothie programs ready for YOU and the world!

I’ve been bubbling in the background just waiting for the day that I could tell you, and that day is here!

Presenting:

The Green Smoothie Queen’s
FREE 3-Day Mini-Course

I thought about all the people who are out there who are tired and unhappy, who are just eating what they’re eating because they don’t realize there are yummy alternatives that will actually make them healthier instead of counting the days until they wind up with cancer or need a heart by-pass.  I thought of the people who are willing to try something new, but don’t know where to start or why a blender could become their new best bud. I wanted to offer them a gentle and easy introduction to raw food that takes nothing away but adds incredible choices.

I  envision a future where kids grow up knowing green smoothies are as delicious and hearty as sliced white bread was in my childhood. This is the step we can take towards this vision.

You can be part of my green smoothie world revolution plans for FREE and receive information, encouragement, recipes, and access to a community of green smoothie enthusiasts who will be right along side you.  You can participate YOURSELF in this LIVE program which begins on Monday, February 22nd, 2010 (the preparation day begins on Sunday, February 21st) or you can share it with your contacts by clicking here and earning yourself a special thank you to participate in our SECOND LIVE PROGRAM.

The Green Smoothie Queen’s LIVE
St. Patty’s 10-Day Green Smoothie Challenge

Once we complete the basics of the 3-Day Mini-Course together, we’ll be moving on to a LIVE St. Patty’s Day Green Smoothie Challenge on March 17, 2010 (with a preparation day on Tuesday, March 16).

I’ve added more content, more fun, more recipes (over 50!) more bonuses, and more ooompf  - all to get you to ADD ONE GREEN SMOOTHIE to your diet per day.  Or, if you’re a keen-for-kale challenge supah-star, then you can choose my path of drinking only green smoothies for the ten days of your challenge.  If you’re adding more greens than your usual amount, then you’re onboard.  Many people spend thousands on their health to look and feel better. All you need $10.

Are you with me?

Ready your jugs my friend… ready your jugs.

365 Days of Green Smoothies with Jessica

Monday, January 25th, 2010 by stacey

We are always excited when people write to us and tell us about how green smoothies are changing their lives.  So we were thrilled when we came across Jessica and her initiative to make green smoothies a part of her daily routine this year.   This gal’s going all out - not 3 days, not 10 days, not even 24 days, but 365 days of green smoothies!  We’ve invited Jessica to tell you a little about her and her blog, and we’ll be looking forward to receiving monthly updates on her progress.  Be sure to stop by her site and give her some green love!

- by Jessica Mauk

Hello there!  My name is Jessica and I’m a green smoothie addict (”Hello, Jessica”).  That’s ok, though.  If being addicted means higher energy, shinier hair, a smaller waistline, and better overall health well sign me up!

The truth is, I haven’t always been addicted to green smoothies.  In fact, up until October 2009 I “enjoyed” a standard American Diet (SAD).  Enjoyed is in quotes because I thought I was enjoying my food, when in fact I was enjoying the flavors that I had trained my palate to expect.  My body was certainly not enjoying itself.

One day I posted on Facebook about my children being sick for the 578th time that year and a friend of mine suggested I check out green smoothies.  I’m sorry, check out what????  Green smoothies.  Oh, ok.  Having no idea what she was talking about, I did some googling, hit up the local library and then made a trip to Barnes & Noble.  My husband thought I’d lost my mind, but he thinks that often, so I wasn’t too worried.

Eventually, I dug out my blender (and had to dust it off) and threw some fruit, some water and some spinach in it.  I tentatively took a sip, with a glass of my trusty favorite soft drink near by just in case I needed to wash out my mouth.  But holy moly, my life was forever changed in that one instant.  I downed that whole glass and poured myself another.  I ran into the living room and shoved this new concoction into my children’s faces screaming “Oh my good golly, you HAVE to try this!!!”  I think my children were too shocked (afraid?) to question me and just did as they were told.  They both gave it a thumbs up and we, as a family, haven’t looked back!

I began making our smoothies every day.  Then the holidays hit us in full force and I became a little relaxed with our newly formed habit.  And I really noticed the difference then.  It’s funny, when you’ve eaten a SAD diet for your entire life, being overweight, sluggish and exhausted all of the time really doesn’t register into your brain.  But once you’ve seen that energy, noticed the difference in your waistline, and removed the cobwebs from your brain, going back is like taking a quick trip into Hades.

We were driving home from my inlaws’ home on Thanksgiving 2009, and I looked at my husband and said, “I need a smoothie.”  Right then I made a vow to eat one quart of smoothie every day.  I knew I couldn’t keep this miracle food to myself, so I decided to write a blog about my adventure, invite all of my friends and family and the rest of the world to come along on my journey with me.  Won’t you please join me on my Year of Green Smoothies Challenge?  You’ll never go back, I promise.

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Well… the tree is finally down, my Christmas lights have resumed the tangled wad that I believe is their natural state (”Why can’t I just hang THIS?” I hear myself saying next year!), and the New Year is off to a running start!  …I figure I should have my laces tied by February.  ;-)

And how are you? Still keen on chlorophyll?  Still gushing with greens?  Or….maybe not so much?

THIS makes me smile!

THIS makes me smile!

That’s okay!  No matter what, here you are accepted and encouraged and surrounded by others who have gone through the same successes and frustrations.  You can decide that just for today, you can do one thing… maybe even one weeeee little thing… to make this day better than yesterday.  Even if you just find something to smile about.  Hmmmm…..

And speaking of smiles!!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

December was all about our 24-Day live Countdown to Christmas program.  We had green guzzlers, smoothie sippers, tabby tasters and juice junkies unite to enjoy a very verdant holiday!  We made ourselves accountable to one another, we shared recipes, we told stories, we threw fluffy snowballs, and we took pictures of our smiling green smoothie mustaches!  All in the name of fun and healthy holiday!

Communities of cutie-pies!

Communities of cutie-pies!

In January and February we’ll be cleaning up and tidying our programs after the holidays, doing a little detoxing, thinking about our wishes for the New Year, and planning for our next live challenge leading up to St. Patty’s Day in March!  And I’m going to see what I need to do to get you to send in more photos my dears!  We really believe that one needs a community to make real changes, and if you’re like me, you like to *see* who’s in your community and how they’re doing!  So send me (thequeen@greensmoothiequeen.com) your snapshots of your green smoothie adventures!  We’d be happy to share them on our blog and our e-zine!  I’ve also got plans for a green gallery too!

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

But, in the meantime and as promised, we selected three photos from our submitted Christmas entries.  We’ve contacted our three winners, we’ve contacted their stores, and we’ll soon be sending three radiant, happy people on green smoothie shopping sprees at their local market!  Sweeeeeet!  Me, my royal self, and I just love spreading around more smiles!  Just when you thought the presents were over!

Now…

Without further ado…  (though I am rather fond of further ado!)

Our three favourite green smoothie mustaches (in no particular order) were:

The lovely young Willow!

Awwwwww #1

Awwwwww #1

The bouncing baby Broden

Yaaaay! #2

Yaaaay! #2

And the raw-star Roxanne!

Glorious #3

Glorious #3

In addition to the bonuses, books, and recipes, all of the people who signed up for the countdown received access to our sparkly new Emerald Lounge (and you can too when you sign up for one of our programs!) and a whack of delicious new and original recipes submitted by our creative countdowners.  You’ll definitely want to take part in our next live event!

Until then, this queen is gonna get her royal feather duster kicked into high gear and do some cleaning, inside and out!

I’ll be looking for you with smiling Irish eyes come March!

Second Effort in Doll’s Green Smoothie Kitchen

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 by stacey

submitted by Doll

Thinking I was right on top of things this morning I decided to get my juicer runnin’.  Carrots, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, and green peppers all went into this great concoction.  Now either because I was being adventurous or still half asleep I made a last minute decision to add a banana to the mix and put it in my trusty blender.  End result?  Not good.  It wasn’t bitter or off tasting, just not a good mix.

Knowing that I really needed a green smoothie this morning I started over.  The remaining juice is in the fridge and will be enjoyed with dinner tonight.

I rinsed out my blender and got right down to business.  Here’s what went in to smoothie # 2 for today:

If at first you scrunch your nose, try again and see how it goes!

If at first you scrunch your nose, try again and see how it goes!

2 ripe bananas
1 handful of frozen raspberries
3 handfuls of mixed baby greens
(made 2 cups)

Success! Sipping on this I sighed in relief and thoroughly enjoyed my second effort!

Here you see my results.  The tall glass is the great smoothie.  The other…well, let’s just say it’s not at all what I wanted.

Can you help name THIS green?

Monday, December 14th, 2009 by stacey

Good day lifestyle enthusiasts!  One of the best features of the Green Smoothie Blender Bender programs is that they are sooo interactive.  The programs provide you with information, solutions, inspiration, and opportunities to connect, and you provide us and your fellow participants with experiences, feedback, questions, and stories.  It’s win-win!  And it’s especially fun when you participate in a live program.  In case you haven’t signed up yet, the green smoothie Countdown to Christmas is festively flying along!  A few days ago, the Green Smoothie Queen received this e-mail from one of the countdown participants:

Kerry's children sharing a smoothie

Kerry's children sharing a smoothie

Hi there.  I am one of the countdown greenies who has not yet checked in with a note.  I have grown attached to my green smoothies, which I try to make twice a day now.  I almost have to if I want to drink more than a cup at a time.  I am a mother of four, and that blender full of smoothie does not go far with three lusty guzzlers who often beg for more.  If my husband is around, I usually have to keep adding ingredients.  He loves them!  Only my eldest will not drink them (8 years), and he is my best salad eater.  I thought that odd.  Anyway, my biggest challenge is paying for all of that organic frozen fruit here in Texas during the winter!  I suppose that it would all even out if I could finally kick my sugar addiction.  High quality chocolate and other sweets sure do cost me a lot, both monetary and health wise no doubt.  I was told that consuming more greens would reduce cravings, but so far that is not the case.  This has been a real disappointment.  I really do not know how people do it.  This is seemingly insurmountable for me.  At least I am blessed with a fairly good metabolism so far.  Sigh.

Kerry's son and a smoothie

Kerry's son and a smoothie

Thank you for the reminders to stay on track and to try something new.  Speaking of trying something new, I was at the store last night and decided to purchase two new greens.  Strangely, neither was labeled.  I was there so late in the evening that I was unable to locate a produce clerk.  Since I made a really tasty smoothie with one of them this morning, I want to be able to write down the name.  Perhaps you can “name that green” this time.  I will send photos of the two mystery greens along with a few of my littlest ones with mild green faces.  My one year old loves to sip down a smoothie with a straw.  She is serious about it!  The photo shows her with my 7-year old who had already finished hers.  My 3-year old is still in his pajamas.  He was playing knight when he came down to drink his smoothie.

Kerry

I’m sure many of you can relate to Kerry’s words.  Are your family members joining you in guzzling the fun as you strive to make improvements to your lifestyle?  Are you running into snags or unexpected surprises?  Each of us has such a unique physiology; it makes sense that our successes and frustrations will be similarly distinct.  Perhaps it may take Kerry a little longer for the greens to reduce her cravings, especially when sweets are still in the diet.  And at this time of year when sweets are all around, maybe the success is just in recognizing that the greens are still coming in and giving her and her family nutrition!  What would YOU tell Kerry? Share your thoughts and make a comment!  We have to work together to overcome that “seemingly insurmountable” wall we all hit from time to time.  What gives you hope and keeps you on track?

But to end this Monday on a fun note, I’m extending Kerry’s mystery green question on to you!  Give me your green guesses and have a splendid week!!

BearHeart’s Breakfast Green Smoothie

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 by admin

This is a recipe from one of our International Green Smoothie Day Challengers

Living in Scandinavia, I am 8 hours before Eastern American time, so I just had my breakfast smoothie - my first green smoothie in about a week and it tasted good and felt fabulously to drink it. Good to be back on the green smoothie track! I don´t want to get off it when this challenge is over.

SmoothieBearHeart’s Breakfast Green Smoothie

Anna Jonsson

  • 1 stem of celery (including the leaves)
  • 1 orange
  • 1 green (granny smith) apple, peeled
  • handful spinach
  • handful romane lettuce
  • handful lambs quarters (lovely “weeds” from the garden)
  • small piece of ginger
  • 1-2 teaspoon honey
  • 1-2 cups water

I like it since it is not too sweet, but I added a little bit of honey and even then it almost was not sweet.

Mmmm. I feel loaded for my morning walk!
See you later, lettuce leaves.

I started as a vegetarian when I was 14, but gave up when as a married woman I tried to start a family and had a miscarriage. I was frightened (unnecessarily) about my diet having a bearing on my ability to conceive and started to incorporate fish and some meats back into my diet. Two children later, I found it difficult to get back to being vegetarian when the rest of the family were eating flesh foods so it wasn’t until my eldest turned 10 and was continually asking to become vegetarian that we made a pact, that we’d both go veggie as long as she would eat what I say she needs to eat for her health. She’s now almost 17 and I am happy to say we are both very healthy!

My husband and son are another matter. My husband is overweight despite cycling everywhere in his job, he suffers from Ulcerative Colitis for which I have had him on organic Molasses since April and currently he has no symptoms. At the start of the year we had a very stressful time as we both thought he had Colon Cancer, all the symptoms seemed to fit but two colonoscopys later we discovered he had UC running the entire length of his Colon and ten biopsies confirmed it was consistent with UC. The hospital have had him waiting 5 months until he sees the Consultant, this appointment is in two weeks from today and meanwhile he has been cured by my Molasses experiment, or so it seems! Would you believe they actually never prescribed him any medication, even though he was passing a LOT of blood every day? I think they will be very surprised at his turn-around in health due to the Molasses. Because of his experiences with his Colon health my husband is quite sceptical about eating a lot of greens and fruits, but he has been gradually coming around to the idea and in fact yesterday he tried my smoothie when I got a takeaway from a Juice Bar. He didn’t like it, due to the seeds haha! But I am going to continue to push the idea for him.

My 13yo son and I are both asthmatic, although I’m very well these days. Both my son and my husband eat a largely vegetarian diet for ease of cooking on my part, however they both supplement their diets with meat wherever they get the chance (lunches, eating out, and the occasional home cooked meaty meal). He has been suffering during the school holidays with wheeziness which has just about gone since he has been sampling my smoothies this past few days! He has noticed the benefits and we have been discussing the potential for his health if he starts having a green smoothie each day. I always hold out hope that he will become vegetarian full time, since he can see how easy it is for me and not to mention cheaper! I believe I have brought my children up to understand the basis of good nutritive foods and this coupled with knowledge of raw foods will give them a great start in their young adult lives when they become more independent.

My husband and I did a month of raw eating back in 2007 but we both found it very difficult. I seemed to be constantly trying to think of things we could eat and chopping ingredients. It largely consisted of raw patés and salads, and lunchtimes we were generally just eating a plate of greens with nuts and things. It became very boring and a real chore to chomp through. One thing I have learned from International Green Smoothie Day is that a glass or two of highly nutritious drink can contain all I need, including the fiber often lost through juicing, with no reason to feel I am missing out on the digestive process begun in the mouth by chewing one’s food. I think a lot of people just gulp down juices in the name of health, lacking in fiber and not bothering to chew, partly because they taste ‘like medicine’ because they haven’t got enough sweet fruits or water and because they don’t feel the need to chew - no skin or bits of pips or seeds. Of course, juices have their place in our diets, but the fiber lost along with some of the vitamins, minerals, fats, amino acids and other properties is a real waste unless the pulp is used to make raw crackers etc.

Anyway I am rambling LOL.

I didn’t hold an ‘event’ unless you count the event itself of taking more green smoothies in, realising several things including those described above, and also the fact that I can ‘get by’ with just my little stick blender! It suits my tastes fine but I’m not so sure I’ve converted hubby just yet as it’s not quite ’smooth enough’ for him. I’ve educated and spread the word at my local juice bar, who are considering adding greens to their menu of available fruit and veggies, and I have gotten my parents interested in eating more things raw including Beets!

I’ve also realised I don’t ‘need’ to buy lots of raw superfoods like Maca, Mesquite, Lucuma, Blue Green Algae, et al to have a healthy balanced raw lifestyle and I am looking forward to setting out to be High Raw once again, with no guilt trips when I feel I want something cooked.

I feel I am off on my path once again; I just took a diversion is all! Thank you so much everyone for this opportunity to take part, learn more, feel more and share more!

We have two boys, 13 and 17! They fight over the fullest glass, even if it’s just by a smidgen! And our granddaughters love to drink this from their “sippie” cups. Minus the nuts and flaked coconut, of course!

Approx. 2 cups of different greens (see below)

2 cups restructured alkaline water

Pulse blend until liquefied

2 T. of flaxseed oil

1/4 cup of fresh coconut water from a baby Thai coconut

1 cup almond milk (optional) made from raw almonds is extra wonderful!

1/2 avocado (optional)

4 frozen strawberries (may use any other berry such as blueberries, raspberries, or all together)

2 frozen bananas

Fresh or flaked unsweetened coconut (optional)

5 pecans or almonds (optional)

Raw agave nectar to sweeten

Pulse blend until smooth. Blend for approx. 10 seconds, and then turn on high for another 20 seconds.
Mild tasting Greens I’ve had success with:

Beet Greens

Chard

Baby Spinach

Dandelion greens

These greens are GOOD, especially kale, but I use sparingly for my boys because they don’t like a strong ‘green- tasting’ smoothie:
