Warm Your Winter Nights!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 by admin

As the nights are drawing in, (it’s dark here by 4:00pm here aaagh!), sometimes the thought of an early evening juice just doesn’t have the same appeal as it does on those fabulous summer evenings.

This recipe looks to remedy this. It is perfect when you feel a little chilly, or in need of a comforting hug as you curl up in front of the fire. The addition of cinnamon really transforms a simple smoothie to complete other level.

Winter Punch Smoothie

Juice:

2 apples

1 carrot

2 oranges, peeled

½ lemon with skin

Transfer to blender and add:

Cinnamon to taste (I used 2 sticks – but then I’m a mega cinnamon fan!)

1 banana

Handful of spinach (add more if you wish)

And blend!!!

This is absolutely fabulous as it is really comforting on cold winter nights. Enjoy!

The Three P's! Pears, Pineapple, Parsley!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 by admin

by Joyce Wiatroski

Hey Green Smoothie Super Star!

Here’s an interesting taste treat you might like to try.

I’ve been using more fresh parsley in my salads, juices and in my smoothies…today I made a super tasting powerhouse:

Pears, Pineapple, Parsley!

  • 2 ripe pears
  • 1/3 of a fresh pineapple (approx)
  • half a frozen banana (to add body and potassium)
  • 1/3 of a large bunch of parsley (approx)
  • 1/2″ slice of fresh ginger
  • 1 cup of filtered water
  • 1 cup of ice cubes (optional)

**I have a Blendtec - so I add a cup of ice cubes on top of everything, too…
this is thick and creamy - eliminate the banana and add more water if you want a thinner outcome.

Enjoy!

Fruity Veggy Smoothie. . .

Thursday, September 24th, 2009 by Aran

I like taking other recipes and changing ingredients but this week I have been inventing my own. And I have now discovered the secret to enjoying green smoothies. Add More Water!

Makes more than one litre

2 Mangoes Blackberries

3 Apples

1 bag of spinach leaves or 4 cups of fresh from the garden.

1 cup Blackberries frozen or fresh

1 head of Celery (you have to like celery or substitute a favourite veggy)

8 large Tomatoes

1 pint of Blueberries (small box from grocery store)

2-3 bottles of Spring or Distilled water

Blend it all together starting with the softer ingredients, and drink!

*Will last me all day.

Berry, Berry, Green Smoothie

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 by Aran

I am a ‘by gosh or by golly’ type of cook. . . .   Entirely intuitive, no recipes allowed. . . lol   Which means I take a little of this and a pinch of that in all my recipes, raw or otherwise. I hope you will enjoy this recipe and change it as much as you like.

Berry, Berry,  Smoothie. . . .fruit2

(Makes 1 litre  or more of smoothie)
3 Bananas,
2 Ripe Peaches
A couple of handfuls of Frozen Blueberries
Sugar snap peas (lovely fresh flavour)
Frozen Blackberries and Raspberries (handful each)
2-3 Cabbage leaves from the Garden
1 Head of Romaine Lettuce
Fresh herbs from the garden (Thyme, Cilantro, Parsley)
1 or 2 bottles of Spring or Distilled water depending how dilute you want it.

Blend everything together beginning with the softest ingredients. Add the   water to make the smoothie to your preference.
(My personal preference is for a thin, ‘dilute’ smoothie)

Green Smoothie Fun!!

Saturday, August 8th, 2009 by Doll

How much fun can you have sharing green smoothies with your friends? Tons!! As part of a Green Smoothie Challenge I had a Green Smoothie Party at my house. I planned sweet and savory smoothies; decorated the house with greenery and offered token gifts and prizes…all green of course. LOL Three of my closest friends joined me in a feast of the senses and had a great time learning about tastes, nutrition and different smoothie combinations.

Here’s a small video from that evening:

Definitely not material for an Oscar award but I will never forget the fun we had!

I’ll share my current favorite smoothie recipe with you:

Watermelon Bliss

  • as much cold watermelon as you can stuff into the blender
  • handful of fresh mint (I’ve been using chocolate mint from my herb garden)
  • ice to make it really chill and frothy

Sip slowly as this truly cold, refreshing drink can rush to your head. Enjoy the sweet taste of summer!

Introducing Green Smoothie to Babies (Kale, Red Grapes, Bananas and Medjool Dates)

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by stacey

drinking green smoothiesThis week I was fortunate to be able to speak at a “Greening Your Life” seminar for a small group of moms and their babies. I thought a lot about what I wanted to talk about because there were so many ideas I wanted to share with them,; however, having 45 minutes in which to speak, I wanted to really get the message out about the importance of non-toxic cleaners in the home as well as the importance of organic and locally grown foods.

I was so excited to be able to sit down and share with these moms why buying organically grown produce is not just beneficial to our family, but also protects farm workers, ensures that genetically modified foods are kept out of our households, protects future generations, protects our water quality and ensures that we keep toxic chemicals off our plates.

The Environmental Working Group recently came out with their updated list of the “Dirty Dozen” as well as their new list called the “Clean 15”, which are fruits and veggies lowest in pesticides. Baby enjoying a green smoothie

I ended my talk with a green smoothie demo and I was very happy to see how much the children enjoyed the green smoothies. One of the babies enjoyed the green smoothie so much that every time her small demo cup was empty, she would let out the biggest cry and her mother couldn’t fill another cup fast enough. I just smiled from ear to ear.

When I sometimes hear moms say that their children will not eat anything green, I wonder where the issue with the color green stems from. Well after seeing how happy these children were drinking green smoothies, they clearly have nothing against the color “green.”

Recipe

  • One bunch kale
  • One cup red grapes
  • One frozen banana
  • One medjool date
  • One cup water

Blend and enjoy!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 by admin

Gooooood morning ye’ ol green smoothie guzzlers!

Forgive this friendly take over of our Green Smoothie Blog, but we’ve got somethin’ exciting going on and thought you should know about it.

It’s St. Patty’s Day! One of the most important days of the year for a Green Smoothie Queen like me. The only other day we get THIS excited about is our International Green Smoothie Day coming up on August 15th. Mark that one in your calendar, my lovelies.

As you’ll see there are a lot of exciting things going on around here… helpful tips, suggestions and recipes galore, so if you’re new to the world of Green Smoothies, then DIVE IN, DARLIN’ and click those links on the side!

For those of you who are currently participating in our Green Smoothie Challenge then Heads up, Honeybunch! It’s finally time for me to reveal our Green Smoothie Awards and The Pot of Gold we’ll put putting at the end of your Green Smoothie Rainbow.

The Pot O’ Gold

While some prizes will be easier to determine than others, we’ll have to decide based on the degree of effort and output. We have books, diva shirts, all of our programs to choose from. The only prize predetermined is the blender and that is for the The Ripple Maker Award–The Person who makes the greatest effort to get the word about Green Smoothies.

Be assured of this, dear green smoothie goer, if you make a stunning effort, we will do whatever we can to dish you up with goodness. Last year we asked Blendtec for an extra machine because we were so impressed with the efforts put out by others.

Successful Green Smoothie Participant Award (Everyone Can Win!)

Just like in marathons and half marathon races, everyone gets a finishers medal for coming on out and playing along. So, as long as you do your best, make it to the finish line and let us know that you’ve made it there and had a great time along the way (it’s okay to tell us if you didn’t have a great time, too, you know) then you will be awarded one of our successful Green Smoothie Participant Awards.

We can’t put a medal around your neck, but we can tell you that for having participated fully and for having shared your success with us, we’ll pass along a special gift to help you along your journey to excellent health and high energy living. So, for those of you who make it to the finish line and tell us about it, we’ll be gifting you with…

...an entire MONTH of raw food recipes LOADED with Green Goodness to inspire you along your journey.

Qualifications: You must be a registered participant of our Green Smoothie Challenge, and you have to send us in a letter letting us know you played along and telling us how it went!

Top Powder Room Posters (5 Winners) Prize Value $30

We’ve got a great community forum going on and this is really the place where people come to support each other, give and get feedback and make things happen. If you’ve not yet check it out, then you can feel free to visit by clicking the link HERE!

Starting today (Tuesday, March 17th) and ending on Saturday morning, after we celebrate the coming of Spring, we’ll be keeping tabs on the Powder Room posters. Those of you who are out there contributing the most, sharing your stories, encouraging others and playing along will be awarded a special Gift from us.

Get Out Your Cameras and Start Revving Your Blenders Because These Are The Active Green Smoothie Goer Awards! All prizes in this category will be valued at between $50-$100.

We’ll be dishing out some treats and surprises for those participants of the program who send in pictures of their kitchen experiments. You can visit the Diva Blog to see examples of how people have done things in the past.

Most Elegant Green Smoothie Presentation Award (1)

C’mon, make it DIVA! ;-) Let yourself go with some flash and sophistication! We’ll be watching!

Most Creative Green Smoothie Presentation Award (1)

We’ve seen all kinds of displays of green love! Whatever you do, make it creative and we’ll be fairly easily impressed.

Most Prolific Green Smoothie Recipe Producer (1 or more if warranted)

This is the person who sends us the most new green smoothie recipes!

Green Smoothie Mustache Awards (5)

These are for kids that get into the spirit of things. Send us pictures of your loved ones smothered in green love lips and we’ll gift you a copy of ALL our ebooks for toddlers and healthy lunches so you’ll have the support you need to get your muffin through his/her growing years with healthy snacks.

Green Smoothie Video Awards (1) Prize Value $100-$150

We want YOU to get out your home video camera and make a mini green smoothie video. It doesn’t have to be about “How to Make” a Green Smoothie. You decide. We give you full creative license to do whatever it takes to inspire us about Green Smoothies, then post it on Youtube. The only qualification is that you must tell people in the video to take the challenge themselves. It doesn’t have to be OUR challenge, just challenge them. Of course,

The Ripple-Maker Award And The Big Red Blendtec Looooove Machine!

We’re pulling out the spanky love machine for this one. I know many of you have been waiting to hear what it’s going to take to win the Blendtec blender and let me tell you, it’s not going to be easy. We need to keep this fair and usually the way we play the “Win the Blender Game” is like this:

As you’ve noticed around here we do our best to offer a lot of great things for FREE or darn near close to FREE. We have out FREE 7-day detox, we have our Green Smoothie Challenge (which is only $5 and we give $3 to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society AND let you invite a special guest for FREE. We also have going on right now a FREE 90-day detox through the diva blog. So it’s proof we don’t mess around when it comes to offering services and support for a community of people inspired about health.

But you know, when you were walking outside the other day… all those people you noticed who look unwell and likely aren’t feeling so hot, either, we don’t know how to get their attention.

We don’t know how to nudge them on the shoulder and say, “Hey! Check out this detox. It might help for that skin condition you have.” or… “Look at this! Maybe it could help you.” We don’t know how to reach all the people in your local community, but YOU DO! and we can certainly help you do it.

Now… here’s the thing:

The Blendtec Love Machine is going to go out to the person who organizes the Green Smoothie Party with the biggest impact on her/his community. The one that touches the most lives.

How do we measure that?

Well, the number of people in attendance is key.

But the number of people promoted to is also key. Let’s say you work like crazy to prepare a Green Smoothie party at your house, but people cancel or don’t come. If you can get them on board by trying it at home instead, then you still expand your ripple.

If you distribute a whole bunch of Green Smoothie cards in your community, that counts, too.

This person DOES need to host an event. The event DOES need to include an educational component–a part of the evening where you get up and explain what Green Smoothies are and provide a demonstration of how to make them. Keeping it simple, of course. Kids in attendance count, too.

Taking Green Smoothies into a school, office or other organization (like a church meeting, or something) also counts. You don’t need to host the event in your own home, you just need to be out there as a spokesperson for Green Smoothies, then tell us about it. We would especially appreciate you taking pictures so we can share this with other people and inspire others to get out into their community and do more of the same.

Okay, so that’s what the luck of the Irish have brought to your Green Smoothie adventure. If you’re not signed up for the program yet, you better get hustling, because you must be REGISTERED in order to WIN!! Even though you would be starting late, if you sign up today, you’ll still get in for the last 4 days of the program.

CONTEST DEADLINE: Even though our 7-day challenge is ending, you will have until midnight on March 27th to submit your entries and we’ll make the official announcement on March 3oth right here on the Green Smoothie Blog!

We know there’s a lot of pressure to get this done, but they say pressure produces the finest results. So get busy, get out there. Don’t make it perfect, just make it and start spreading the word about Green Smoothies. You don’t need a certificate in anything to show someone how to run a blender or buy fruit and leafy greens. You just need enthusiasm and a wee bit of courage!

IMPORTANT NOTE: All participants need to send their submissions to the following email address:

thequeen at greensmoothiequeen.com, or just respond to any of your emails from the program!

May the luck of the Irish be with you this fine sunny day and every day!

With clover coated kisses,

Green Smoothie Queen

Falling in love all over again! (Green Smoothie Goodness Rediscovered with Oranges, Spinach, Celery, and a Banana)

Thursday, March 12th, 2009 by Doll

Falling in love all over again!

Carrots and greens in heart shape

OK, I’ll admit it. I’ve moved away from my loving green smoothies.

  • The vibrant color;
  • the velvety smooth way it feels in my mouth;
  • the added rush of energy as my body responds.

All this was left behind for some unthinkable, unmentionable foods.

Yes, this is my confession for all to see. My guess is the winter blahs were pulling me down and left me wanting. The best part of any confession is the great feeling of freedom once the subject is off your chest.

Green Smoothie in Green Smoothie Jug

So now that I am refreshed and ready to face a the day, dear smoothie you better get ready!

I’m back to where I know I need to be. Green smoothie jug in hand, filled with the wonders of fresh fruit and greens, you will once more be my favored companion and joy!

OK, so my husband knows he’s the love of my life. Just having some fun with words here. :-)

Morning Wake-Up Smoothie!Oranges

  • 2 or 3 oranges
  • 1 banana
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 2 handfuls of spinach

Holiday Memories of Persimmon Treats…Food of the Gods? (Persimmon, Bananas, and Nutmeg)

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 by tera

Persimmons
What would holiday memories be without our special holiday foods?  When think back and remember our  family celebrations I can literally smell and taste the wonderful foods.

This year I’m remembering a new food — Persimmons!

I first experienced persimmons this fall when the Body Enlightenment System recipes I was using included many persimmons. I remember looking suspiciously at the somewhat odd-looking fruits at my local food co-op. I wasn’t sure how to choose the best ones, and I have to admit the price seemed more than a little high to me. However, after tasting the sweet juicy persimmons I decided they were more than worth that price!

After falling in love with persimmons I started feeding that love as often as possible. In addition to simply eating the glorious food in all its wonderful goodness, I made persimmon smoothies and puddings regularly. From simply blending a persimmon into pudding for a fun treat, to making it into a nutritious green smoothie — persimmons became a regular treat I looked forward to!

Simply Persimmon Pudding or DrinkCelery

  • 1-2 Soft ripe persimmons
  • 1-3 celery stalks, depending on preference and desired consistency
  • water to desired consistency (add a little at a time!)

This simple persimmon pudding or drink was my first experience with blending persimmons, and I found that they blend up wonderfully thick and decadent, and if you let the blended mixture set just a little while it is sets up like a pie filling! In my experience if I want to be able to drink it, especially through a straw, I have to include quite a bit of water! I also discovered that I LOVE the combination of persimmons with celery. Of course I now love just about any fruit blended with celery so I should no longer be surprised at these wonderful combinations.

Fuyu Persimmon in hand

The second time I went to the store I noticed two different types of persimmons: Hachiya and Fuyu. The heart-shaped Hachiya must be very soft before eating them, but the Fuyu, shaped more like a tomato, can be eaten while still hard. However, I’ve only eaten either type when they are soft as I prefer the texture. I also eat organic persimmons so that I can eat the entire fruit without peeling it. The main reason I don’t bother to peel it is because I am lazy. So far this has not affected the consistency of my smoothies or puddings.

While the nutritional content of each type of persimmon varies somewhat, both seem to be excellent sources of vitamin C, beta carotene, and minerals. To me, this makes it an especially excellent fruit to enjoy during the challenging cold season here in Wisconsin. And the enjoyment … oh, some say that persimmons are the “Food of the Gods” and I think I agree.

So, you can imagine how I felt when I wasn’t able to find any persimmons at the few grocery stores I had a chance to stop at while in Texas on our Christmas trip. While I was thrilled with all of the wonderful fresh citrus, I was a bit sad that I couldn’t make the Holiday Persimmon Smoothie that my BES Buddy, Alissa, had given me the recipe for shortly before I left to head south.

Then, as we were heading back north there they were — just a few ripe persimmons in the produce section of the unsuspecting grocery store located just off of the Interstate…I caught my breath in anticipation! I looked at them, went back to filling my cart with the “travel essentials” on my list, and then went and stared at them again…I couldn’t resist. So, I purchased two wonderfully ripe persimmons to stash in our cooler until I could get into the hotel that night. I practically drooled thinking about those juicy persimmons the rest of the day!   Later that night I pulled my Blendtec blender out of the cooler I keep it in while traveling (don’t you travel with your blender?), and whipped up a custard-like smoothie that will forever be part of my Christmas memories!

Perfect Persimmon Holiday SmoothieSmoothie by Jack Mora

submitted by Alissa
  • Blend a handful or kale and about 1/2 cup of water together
  • Add  and blend together:
    2 bananas
    2 persimmons
1/2 cup of water (less for a pudding consistency, more for a smoothie texture)
freshly grated nutmeg (about 1 tsp)

Think of sitting by a warm fire when drinking.
