10 Joyful Reasons to Believe in Green

Believe in Green

You know that feeling… the one you get when you’ve just done something good?  Where a choice had no down side?  Where something you do for yourself has positive, valuable ripple effects for other people?

It kinda starts in your chest and then creeps into your throat, all the while expanding, bubbling, blossoming… and that feeling bursts into a grin, and if you’re a big ol’ softy like me, you feel your eyes glass up with even more joy because you can’t help but see the good, and there’s some kinda self-satisfying humbling glee in being part of something bigger than yourself.

It just. feels. soooo. good!

That’s how I’m feeling these days leading up to BiG!

I love that feeling… and it’s one worth sharing!  And I challenge YOU to join me in the joy bubble!  So here are 10 reasons for you to consider… pick your joy, any joy, and become part of something BiG! (more…)

LIVE 10-Day Challenge & “Lucky Links” Contest - Ripple Maker Awards!

Friday, April 9th, 2010 by stacey

During our LIVE St. Patty’s Day 10-Day Green Smoothie Challenge, we were giddy when the generous folks at Blendtec came through with a fantastic prize that had our contest participants excited and spreading green ripples far and wide!

Our “Lucky Links” contest was a new contest that we tried on for size - something that would let anyone, anywhere participate in making green ripples and spreading the word about green smoothies, which is always a goal of ours!  We’re grateful to all of our helpful ripple makers, and we’re delighted to let you know who our top ripple makers were!

Our 3rd place Ripple Maker:

Tanya Armalla - Alberta, Canada

tanya-armalla-hinton-alberta-march-2010-smTanya sent in 84 links and swooped into 3rd place.  This is a picture of the “Green Smoothie Smile” she sent in during the 10-Day Challenge.  It features her with cheerful greens in her teeth and all! - a look that I wear on a daily basis!  ;-)

As promised, we’ve invited Tanya to participate in the 21-Day Green Smoothie Detox that starts this Sunday.

Our 2nd place Ripple Maker:

Yvonne Bergeron - Texas, U.S.A

yvonne-bergeron-austin-texas-march-2010-smYvonne dazzled her way into 2nd place with 119 links.  Now… I do have to say that Yvonne persevered through every “Lucky Link” mishap you can imagine! Can you believe she was almost too enthusiastic?  We were worried when she wrote to us and told her that she’d been given a ta-ta on the wrist from Wordpress for leaving too many comments.  But thankfully all was forgiven!

And I’m sure we’ve all had files that were there one minute and gone the next.  Even with the missing links that are out there in the ether somewhere, Yvonne was one of our top contributors!

Her faith in us and green smoothies has also  earned her a place in our 21-Day Green Smoothie Detox program.

Our 1st place Ripple Maker:

Kristie Swing - Ontario, Canada

kristie-swing-march-2010-ripple-maker-award1Kristie rippled and reached her way to 128 links, making her the winner of a shiny, red Blendtec blender!  We spoke with Kristie earlier this week to give her the good news, and she’s already cleared a spot on her counter!

Apparently our timing was good as she was trying to figure out how to get herself some or any kind of new blender. Her blending worries are over!  Her determination to earn herself the means to finally free herself of lumpy smoothies has been rewarded!

While Kristie rustles us up a picture to send in of her beaming, smiling face, we’ll share with you one of the recipes she sent in during the LIVE 10-Day Challenge:

I like to ‘turn up the heat’ with my ‘Mango Tango’…it’s great for the cold winter here in Ontario.

Mango Tango

By Kristie Swing
(makes about 20 ounces)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of a combo of frozen or fresh mango and pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup of carrot juice
  • 1 inch of grated fresh ginger
  • 3 handfuls of greens (Today it was mixed baby greens, but yesterday it was baby spinach.)

Directions:

Blend well.  Then … add a teaspoon of ground flax seeds and blend again.

NOTE: Sometimes if it’s too thick I’ll add some orange juice or water to the desired consistency

Green and Grateful!

Our recent LIVE 10-Day Challenge was a green heaping success!  Our blenders runneth over!  Countless people wrote to me to tell me their stories, to share what an improvement that adding greens made to their lives, and to thank us for our spirit of adventure and fun!

Of course… the only thing that makes sense then is to carry on with more of just that!  So we’ll be enjoying the rest of April with our 21-Day Green Smoothie Detox.  It’s the first time we’re offering this program, so you can take advantage of our accompanying spring sale and take the program for half-price!  But Saturday is your deadline for signing up!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest, and we appreciate the health and wellness your work will inspire!  Every day more people are putting fruits and greens into their blenders and energy into their bodies!

Wishing you a joyful spring!

Day 10 - It’s Only the Green Smoothie Beginning!

Friday, March 26th, 2010 by stacey

:-D Scuze my goofy grin, but I just had to find some silly kind of way to express what my morning has been like!  While sipping away on my Day 10 Green Smoothie of papaya, grapes, and baby bok choy, I’ve been gleefully checking my inbox and giving my cheek muscles an ironman workout from enjoying all the fantastic e-mails, pictures, and stories you’ve been sending on the last day of our LIVE green smoothie challenge together!  It’s been soooo much fun, and I wish you could just see the way your feedback makes me light up!   And if your green smoothie experiences excite me, I know that they would inspire a whole world of people.  I’m definitely going to add more photo galleries to this green smoothie queendom!

carolyn-stutts-march-2010-birthday-on-day-9-of-challenge-smFor example, take this beautiful picture from Carolyn this morning!  Here’s what she wrote to me:

Hello Your Highness!

Today was the 9th day of the 10-day challenge and also my birthday!  I was going all out on Green Smoothies all day until my good friend dropped by with this CAKE!  Not exactly raw and healthy, but a wonderful surprise!  She did not know YOU are already the queen, so no worries (I’m not trying to dethrone you!) ha!  I wake up every morning anxious to get your emails!  And my husband has started requesting GREEN SMOOTHIES for his meals!  We are having so much fun with this!  THANK YOU!!

Love, Carolyn*

I was so abso-lettuce-ly THRILLED by this that I completely forgot to wish Carolyn a happy birthday when I replied! So HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLYN!! :-P  As I told her, yes we love, love, love green smoothies and raw food, but I really believe that being supported in that way, beautiful cooked cake or whatever, is more amazing for one’s well-being than a whole jug of chlorophyll.  We all need friends like that, and thankfully, a challenge like this really does pull such people together!  We’re all here to add delight and energy and well-ness to our worlds. I see a whole lotta love and support in this image, and THAT’s what I want to help contribute too!

And this doesn’t have to be the end of your challenge.  You can choose each and every morning to wake up and take it one day at a time…  You can remember to look at greens a whole new way each time in you’re in the grocery store and work towards filling your cart with rainbows of  fruits and greens that outnumber the cans and boxes.  Wouldn’t you rather come home with rainbows to fill your fridge?

diane-moody-westminster-colorado-march-2010-smYou can live with gusto!  You can be silly!  You can be smiley!  You can be Diane! I’m forever, forever, forever, going to love this photo!  We think it’s the BEST green smoothie mustache we’ve ever been sent!  It’s SO much FUN, it’s passionate, and it’s GREEN! And do you know what Diane said when she sent it? “I hope this photo makes someone else laugh as hard as I was!” It’s sooo easy to spread good, positive energy with others.   You can make them laugh, you can make them smile, and by wonderful-watercress, you can make them a green smoothie!

My heart is green and glowing this morning, and I can’t wait for our next program!  We’re putting together a 21-Day green smoothie detox program for all those who are green, keen, and ready for their next step!  I’ll let you know when it’s ready to roll!

And of course, there’s more good news to come!  Tonight, our challengers will be submitting their entries for our “Lucky Links” contest and SOMEBODY is going to receive a gorgeous Blendtec blender!  Then there’ll be some smiles that may rival my own today!  The deadline is tonight at midnight, E.S.T. Stacey, my GSQ gal, is moving this weekend, but next week we’ll be going through the contest entrants and verifying a winner!  We’ll contact our winner and announce the results here on the blog in April.

Of course, you can end this day in wild style with the teleseminar with Sergei Boutenko on Wild Greens!  You’ll find it on your Day 10 Challenge page to enjoy!  There’s always something new to learn and something new to try around here!

I thank you for all your enthusiasm and participation!  It’s been a dream challenge and a whole lotta fun!  And it could only be that way because of YOU.  So give yourself a hug from me and have an extra glass of green smoothie to light up your heart and energy to a royal glow!  And for those of you who may have missed the LIVE run of this program, fear not!  All the information, the Emerald Lounge recipes and contacts, e-mails, and teleseminars will continue to be available in the 10-Day Green Smoothie Challenge.  Starting on Monday, March 29th, 2010, you’ll be able to take this program on your own whenever it works for your schedule and treat yourself to a 10-day blast of energy and fun!

Loving the pot ‘o greens and grins at the end of this rainbow

You’ll find the link to THE  call on your Day 8 Challenge page, or you can also find it posted under Day 8 of the 10-Day section in the Emerald Lounge!

Green Smoothie Smiles

sheree-britt-santee-california-march-2010-smSpeaking of The Emerald Lounge, our Emerald Empress Keely has been doing a FANTASTIC job of working through the stack of green smoothie smiles that our challengers have been sending in to us!  I thought I’d pick a few for you to enjoy, but there are many more of these in The Emerald Lounge!

And one of the submissions that gave ME my biggest green smoothie smile this week came from from Tanya R.!  Really… I totally giggle-snorted a shot of liquid spinach out my nose at a couple of these lines.  Not very queenly, but I was royally delighted!

Green Smoothie Challenge Testimonials

How’s that for leafily adorable!? And I continue to receive fantastic and encouraging e-mails and testimonials for people who are discovering greens for the first time and finding out for themselves how much better they feel, how much more energy they have, and even how beautiful their skin looks!  Yvonne Bergeron (pictured below beside her post) has been sending me notes on her participation experience with the “Lucky Links” contest and told me she’s been blogging about some of her green smoothie challenge.  This is an excerpt from one of her recent posts:

yvonne-bergeron-austin-texas-march-2010-smIt was super slow at the Spa today.  I had no massages at all, but I had boundless amounts of energy. My boyfriend is now trying the green smoothies too. He can’t get over how much energy I have ;) I am getting ready for Lost, only 8 episodes left and tonight is about Richard!! Enough about that, let’s talk more about my smoothies. Today I had several colleagues comment about my skin, IT’S GLOWING!!! Not in the radioactive green kind of way but in the OMG what are you using kind of way.. Also you have to realize that I work with professional Estheticians; they look at skin all day and they know what problems I have with mine. All of my allergies have caused major breakouts and problem skin my whole life. I am 32 and up until a week ago I had on and off again adult acne. Now my skin is as smooth as a baby’s ;).  I also am losing inches on my legs. I am not a heavy girl but my legs have been a lifetime bane of mine. The more muscle I would put on, the bigger they would look because the pockets of cellulite would just get pushed out further making it look worse. Well I will tell you … today… no more pockets.  Ok ok, they are still there but only I would notice them. I would say that they are 50% reduced. LET’S DO THE HAPPY DANCE!!!! ( Prancing around the room giggling)
OK OK, I am going to get ready for Lost. And go look at my legs in the mirror. HUGE GRIN!!
Love and Light!!

Green Smoothie Ripple-Maker Award - “Lucky Links” Blendtec Contest

Yvonne is one of the challengers who is participating in our “Lucky Links” contest and is seeking to spread the word about green smoothies and possibly win our “Ripple Maker” award.  I’m looking forward to receiving all our entries on Friday night.  Our contest winner will be receiving the ultimate green smoothie prize - a green-busting Blendtec!

In fact, I checked in on Monday with Blendtec’s own Matt Best!  I asked him how he was finding the experience of the challenge.  He wrote back:

“Honestly I’m loving it.  On Friday we had green smoothie samples here at Blendtec for all our employees.  I have been having about 32 ounces a day of blended green goodness, which has been awesome.  I seem to have more energy and am more alert.”

YAY!  We love you Matt!   Those Blendtec folks are awesome, and I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to making someone’s blending dreams come true!  And what’s even better, the word is spreading!  More people are learning about green smoothies and trying their very first tastes of bananas and spinach!  The ripples you’re making will soon be WAVES!

joelle-amaya-price-utah-march-2010-smSo THANK YOU for being so positive, for sharing your feedback, for participating, and for giving off such a glow that other people are asking, “What’s got into YOU lately?”  I hope you’ll answer them with a smile and raise your glass of greens my irresistible smiling cuties!

See you for the big BLENDER BENDER tomorrow when we dedicate our whole day to drinking Sunshine.  I hope your insides become so bright and cheery that your livers need sunglasses!  ;-)

With bountiful green gratitude!

I started as a vegetarian when I was 14, but gave up when as a married woman I tried to start a family and had a miscarriage. I was frightened (unnecessarily) about my diet having a bearing on my ability to conceive and started to incorporate fish and some meats back into my diet. Two children later, I found it difficult to get back to being vegetarian when the rest of the family were eating flesh foods so it wasn’t until my eldest turned 10 and was continually asking to become vegetarian that we made a pact, that we’d both go veggie as long as she would eat what I say she needs to eat for her health. She’s now almost 17 and I am happy to say we are both very healthy!

My husband and son are another matter. My husband is overweight despite cycling everywhere in his job, he suffers from Ulcerative Colitis for which I have had him on organic Molasses since April and currently he has no symptoms. At the start of the year we had a very stressful time as we both thought he had Colon Cancer, all the symptoms seemed to fit but two colonoscopys later we discovered he had UC running the entire length of his Colon and ten biopsies confirmed it was consistent with UC. The hospital have had him waiting 5 months until he sees the Consultant, this appointment is in two weeks from today and meanwhile he has been cured by my Molasses experiment, or so it seems! Would you believe they actually never prescribed him any medication, even though he was passing a LOT of blood every day? I think they will be very surprised at his turn-around in health due to the Molasses. Because of his experiences with his Colon health my husband is quite sceptical about eating a lot of greens and fruits, but he has been gradually coming around to the idea and in fact yesterday he tried my smoothie when I got a takeaway from a Juice Bar. He didn’t like it, due to the seeds haha! But I am going to continue to push the idea for him.

My 13yo son and I are both asthmatic, although I’m very well these days. Both my son and my husband eat a largely vegetarian diet for ease of cooking on my part, however they both supplement their diets with meat wherever they get the chance (lunches, eating out, and the occasional home cooked meaty meal). He has been suffering during the school holidays with wheeziness which has just about gone since he has been sampling my smoothies this past few days! He has noticed the benefits and we have been discussing the potential for his health if he starts having a green smoothie each day. I always hold out hope that he will become vegetarian full time, since he can see how easy it is for me and not to mention cheaper! I believe I have brought my children up to understand the basis of good nutritive foods and this coupled with knowledge of raw foods will give them a great start in their young adult lives when they become more independent.

My husband and I did a month of raw eating back in 2007 but we both found it very difficult. I seemed to be constantly trying to think of things we could eat and chopping ingredients. It largely consisted of raw patés and salads, and lunchtimes we were generally just eating a plate of greens with nuts and things. It became very boring and a real chore to chomp through. One thing I have learned from International Green Smoothie Day is that a glass or two of highly nutritious drink can contain all I need, including the fiber often lost through juicing, with no reason to feel I am missing out on the digestive process begun in the mouth by chewing one’s food. I think a lot of people just gulp down juices in the name of health, lacking in fiber and not bothering to chew, partly because they taste ‘like medicine’ because they haven’t got enough sweet fruits or water and because they don’t feel the need to chew - no skin or bits of pips or seeds. Of course, juices have their place in our diets, but the fiber lost along with some of the vitamins, minerals, fats, amino acids and other properties is a real waste unless the pulp is used to make raw crackers etc.

Anyway I am rambling LOL.

I didn’t hold an ‘event’ unless you count the event itself of taking more green smoothies in, realising several things including those described above, and also the fact that I can ‘get by’ with just my little stick blender! It suits my tastes fine but I’m not so sure I’ve converted hubby just yet as it’s not quite ’smooth enough’ for him. I’ve educated and spread the word at my local juice bar, who are considering adding greens to their menu of available fruit and veggies, and I have gotten my parents interested in eating more things raw including Beets!

I’ve also realised I don’t ‘need’ to buy lots of raw superfoods like Maca, Mesquite, Lucuma, Blue Green Algae, et al to have a healthy balanced raw lifestyle and I am looking forward to setting out to be High Raw once again, with no guilt trips when I feel I want something cooked.

I feel I am off on my path once again; I just took a diversion is all! Thank you so much everyone for this opportunity to take part, learn more, feel more and share more!

We have two boys, 13 and 17! They fight over the fullest glass, even if it’s just by a smidgen! And our granddaughters love to drink this from their “sippie” cups. Minus the nuts and flaked coconut, of course!

  • Approx. 2 cups of different greens (see below)
  • 2 cups restructured alkaline water
  • Pulse blend until liquefied
  • 2 T. of flaxseed oil
  • 1/4 cup of fresh coconut water from a baby Thai coconut
  • 1 cup almond milk (optional) made from raw almonds is extra wonderful!
  • 1/2 avocado (optional)
  • 4 frozen strawberries (may use any other berry such as blueberries, raspberries, or all together)
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • Fresh or flaked unsweetened coconut (optional)
  • 5 pecans or almonds (optional)
  • Raw agave nectar to sweeten

Pulse blend until smooth. Blend for approx. 10 seconds, and then turn on high for another 20 seconds.

Mild tasting Greens I’ve had success with:

Beet Greens

Chard

Baby Spinach

Dandelion greens

These greens are GOOD, especially kale, but I use sparingly for my boys because they don’t like a strong ‘green- tasting’ smoothie:

I’ve Been Osterized!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 by admin

In preparation for International Green Smoothie Day, I’ve been upping my green smoothie quotient.

This morning was a test.

I’ve always told people that you don’t need a fancy, shmancy blender to do the Green Smoothie Challenge. I’ve always told people that they can just use a cheap $10 Osterizer from a garage sale to do the trick.

But as long as I’ve been a raw foodist, I’ve always had a fancy, shmancy blender. So what did I know? Until, this morning!

I had spotted his Osterizer some time ago and decided that it would be perfect for trying out some kitchen experiments for raw foodists on a budget!

Well stocked with Swiss chard from our little garden plot, and oodles of fresh fruit, this morning I decided it was time to pull out the OSTERIZER!

I loaded it up with:

  • 2 fresh bananas
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 peaches
  • 1/2 cup of Mr. Right’s Tropicana juice. ;-)

If you’re hard core, just add water. I was trying to impress the Prince of Prosciutto, so I sweetened it up with some of his favorite juice!

Then I got this whizzing, whirring, stirring and blending in the old Osterizer until there was a creamy smooth consistency happening. (Honestly, at this point I was already very impressed with the smooth texture.) I was expecting the peel of the peach to be a bit chuncky, but it was smoooth as smoothie gets.

That’s when I started adding the Swiss chard.

I don’t usually add the spine of the leaves. I suppose I added about 5 or 6 big leaves before I called it quits.

I was SHOCKED, AMAZED, IMPRESSED and sooooooo SURPISED that the cheap little Osterizer had pulled off a green smoothie of magnificent smoothness.

Could she have pulverized parsley with the same finesse? I’m not sure.

Could she have done it to grape skins, or think, curly kale? Hard to say.

But this morning’s ingredients were no competition to the persistent little blades of this blender beauty.

I still loooove my Blendtec. I don’t think this little Osterizer could ever pump out almond milk or other concoctions that I’ve come to love with my fancy, shmancy blender. But the proof is definitely in the green pudding this morning:

When you’re starting out on green smoothies

and managing a budget, you definitely,

definitely do NOT need to spend

a fortune on a blender!

P.S.

Aside from the 10 reasons I’ve written before about why I prefer Blendtec, and aside from the fact that Blendtec wins the banana ice cream making competition HANDS DOWN, E V E R Y TIME over other blenders that might attempt to compete against it, the BIGGEST reason I am fiercely loyal to Blendtec is because they have no quarrel with the fact that we tell people they do NOT need to buy a fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.

When International Green Smoothie Day launched last year, we were actually approached by another company who offered to sponsor us. We politely declined when we were told that their sponsorship was conditional upon us removing all traces of garage sale/hardware store blenders from our site and instead telling people that they must buy their fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.

Pshaw!

Money should NOT get in the way of your health!

Here’s a BIG Green Smoothie toast to Blendtec,  and to Osterizer-uses everywhere and here’s to making due with what you’ve got when you’ve got it!

Because grass roots grow, Baby, and you’ve gotta start somewhere.

Now, I’m off this soap box and outta here to take on the day!

International Green Smoothie Day is Coming

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 by admin

Oooooh sweet, Swiss chard! I can’t believe our International Green Smoothie Day will be kicking off in just a few days! For those of you who haven’t yet registered, it’s not too late to jump on board for this adventure! You can sign up at our Green Smoothie Queen site.

When you check out that page, you’ll notice a whole lot of logo lovin’ going on. That’s because we’ve had scads of enthusiastic contributors joining in to help us with this event. Many of you are likely wondering:

How Can I Win That Spanky New Blendtec Blender??

Well, my little lambs quarter lover, I’ll tell you all about it.

You see, the tradition with our Green Smoothie celebrations is that we give away a Blendtec Blendter (sometimes two) to the person who makes the biggest impact on their social community. This program is all about making health and vitality accessible to EVERYONE! It’s about sharing wisdom, not profits. It’s about health, not Hallmark!

We’ve very lucky to be sponsored by Blendtec and Excalibur and we want to make sure that the winners of these prizes feel honored to be given these gifts! That’s why we invite participants of our Green Smoothie Challenge to host a Green Smoothie Party of some kind. The last time we did this event for St. Patrick’s Day, our winner was from Mexico, and she shared Green Smoothies with her entire school of elementary-aged children! You can check out the pictures and the submissions of our other winners here! We requested the most creative Green Smoothie photo, and the classiest Green Smoothie photo, too! We had all kinds of things and it was REALLY exciting to see everyone’s contributions. Our winner recorded a fantastic video and it was really an exciting thing to see.

Last year’s International Green Smoothie Day winner invited as many friends as she could over to her house. Cats and dogs included, the numbers were high enough that she won the grand prize! Another winner brought little handouts to work and shared green smoothies with her co-workers!

We’re not asking for the impossible, we just want to see some initiative and inspiration! Show us that you’re out there making a difference and we’ll acknowledge you for your efforts with accolades and express packages in the mail!

We have TWO grand prizes to give away this year. The Blendtec blender AND a 9-tray Excalibur dehydrator! There are LOADS of other treats, goodies, DVDs, books, ebooks, coaching and all kinds of surprises contributed by friends and associates, and those will be chosen by a draw. All participants of the program will be entered in the draw, but those who contribute to the Powder Room forum, those who send in recipes, videos, etc. will get their name thrown into the hat a few more times.

Contribution counts. What are YOU doing to get involved, inspired and sharing the good news with your community?

That’s what Green Smoothie Day all about!

If you’ve not yet read our announcement page, it’s worth checking out. Not just because it does a rather fine job of summing up my view on life as a raw foodist, but because it explains the purpose behind this event!

My garden is billowing with Swiss chard, fresh parsley and all the ingredients I need to make the best green smoothies ever!Prepare yourselves for the adventure! Stock up and get your blenders ready and revved for action! Saturday we kick off our International Green Smoothie Day Celebrations and want YOU on board making it all happen with us!

Okay, Sparkle Puff, my to do list is calling, but I’m excited to have kick started this Green Smoothie extravaganza and look forward to hearing from you! Just so you know, all Green Smoothie Day contest entries need to be submitted in the Powder Room this year! If you have any questions about how to get started and join in the fun, then contact me at:
