“People should fall in love with their eyes closed. Just close your eyes. Don’t look. And it’s magic.”
-Andy Warhol
I glanced over at my little Andy Warhol desk calendar yesterday and that was the quote for the month. The second I read it I automatically thought of smoothies. Sometimes people need to close their eyes to get over the “green factor.” I also envisioned how I often close my eyes as I savor a luscious green smoothie.
Drinking green smoothies shouldn’t be a chore. Don’t do it just as a routine, because you want to lose weight, cut those cravings or whatever motivation you may have. I may be making green smoothies for other people every single morning, but if I am not feeling like one for myself, I don’t do it. I have learned to only make myself a smoothie when I know I will love it. When I know that all the ingredients are speaking to me and my body lovingly accepts them and all the healing that they will bring to me.
Don’t get me wrong. I think that sometimes it takes a green smoothie challenge or just sticking to a daily commitment to help you break though cravings and gain that nutrition that you need. So just make sure when you do it, you are doing it with love.
For those of you who know a bit about Aryuveda, I am a vata dosha. Vata’s like sweet, warm, moist, slightly oily, heavy foods. Many times I see myself serving my dosha when putting a recipe together, without even thinking about it, I am balancing myself out. Today I share my favorite loving magical smoothie recipe for those times when I just want to close my eyes and be swept away. It may be bad food combining, but sometimes it’s what Disa’s dosha calls for.
Disa’s Dosha Balance
-
2 cups (or more) baby spinach
-
2-3 frozen bananas
-
2 heaping tablespoons of raw almond butter
-
2 heaping tablespoons of raw coconut butter
-
1 heaping tablespoon of raw cacao powder
-
Raw honey or agave to sweeten
-
Maca to taste
-
Cinnamon to taste
-
Water to blend
Blend and top with Bee Pollen granules. Other variations would include throwing in some strawberries and fresh mint leaves for a mint maca treat.
*Please note I never actually measure my stuff out, so these are approximations. Feel free to play

Aryuveda is fun. For example my boyfriend is primarily Pitta dosha so he gravitates toward hot spices and cold drinks. He will often find that putting some cayenne or habenero pepper in his smoothie is especially satisfying. And there are Kapha’s who find balance in bitter and astringent taste. So basil and dandelion would be a great base for their smoothies. I got into Aryuveda while reading Conscious Eating, so if your looking for an interesting way to look at the way you eat give it a try.
Have fun, experiment and love your green smoothies. We all know that our bodies love us for drinking them.
