The Queen’s on Facebook!

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 by stacey

I gotta tell ya, I’m pretty excited.  January has been such a blast so far.  My Green Team has been helping me around the site, behind the scenes, and working to put together some delicious improvements for all of you who benefit from the information we share.

I’m going to have an announcement for you quite soon about a new FREE program we’ll be offering.  Each day I check in with my guys and gals to see how things are coming and each time I do, I get more excited.  This is a program I want everyone to try!  You see, I believe that the more people I can tell about green smoothies, the more my dreams of helping people to become well through their own wisdom and action seem within reach.

And you know, this really is the sort of health information that’s most successful when it’s passed on from person to person.   Someone told me about green smoothies, now here I am!  So… I got to thinking (do you smell green smoke too??), why not ‘get with the times’ and use the social networking tools that are available?

So I got me a profile!!  Ain’t it purty?

Merry Mustaches! And the Winners are…

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Some Christmas joy from Sara!

Well… the tree is finally down, my Christmas lights have resumed the tangled wad that I believe is their natural state (”Why can’t I just hang THIS?” I hear myself saying next year!), and the New Year is off to a running start!  …I figure I should have my laces tied by February.  ;-)

And how are you? Still keen on chlorophyll?  Still gushing with greens?  Or….maybe not so much?

THIS makes me smile!

THIS makes me smile!

That’s okay!  No matter what, here you are accepted and encouraged and surrounded by others who have gone through the same successes and frustrations.  You can decide that just for today, you can do one thing… maybe even one weeeee little thing… to make this day better than yesterday.  Even if you just find something to smile about.  Hmmmm…..

And speaking of smiles!!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

Even Charlie got in on some green slurping!

December was all about our 24-Day live Countdown to Christmas program.  We had green guzzlers, smoothie sippers, tabby tasters and juice junkies unite to enjoy a very verdant holiday!  We made ourselves accountable to one another, we shared recipes, we told stories, we threw fluffy snowballs, and we took pictures of our smiling green smoothie mustaches!  All in the name of fun and healthy holiday!

Communities of cutie-pies!

Communities of cutie-pies!

In January and February we’ll be cleaning up and tidying our programs after the holidays, doing a little detoxing, thinking about our wishes for the New Year, and planning for our next live challenge leading up to St. Patty’s Day in March!  And I’m going to see what I need to do to get you to send in more photos my dears!  We really believe that one needs a community to make real changes, and if you’re like me, you like to *see* who’s in your community and how they’re doing!  So send me (thequeen@greensmoothiequeen.com) your snapshots of your green smoothie adventures!  We’d be happy to share them on our blog and our e-zine!  I’ve also got plans for a green gallery too!

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

Sippin' in her jammies! Think she learned that from me sunshine?

But, in the meantime and as promised, we selected three photos from our submitted Christmas entries.  We’ve contacted our three winners, we’ve contacted their stores, and we’ll soon be sending three radiant, happy people on green smoothie shopping sprees at their local market!  Sweeeeeet!  Me, my royal self, and I just love spreading around more smiles!  Just when you thought the presents were over!

Now…

Without further ado…  (though I am rather fond of further ado!)

Our three favourite green smoothie mustaches (in no particular order) were:

The lovely young Willow!

Awwwwww #1

Awwwwww #1

The bouncing baby Broden

Yaaaay! #2

Yaaaay! #2

And the raw-star Roxanne!

Glorious #3

Glorious #3

In addition to the bonuses, books, and recipes, all of the people who signed up for the countdown received access to our sparkly new Emerald Lounge (and you can too when you sign up for one of our programs!) and a whack of delicious new and original recipes submitted by our creative countdowners.  You’ll definitely want to take part in our next live event!

Until then, this queen is gonna get her royal feather duster kicked into high gear and do some cleaning, inside and out!

I’ll be looking for you with smiling Irish eyes come March!

Happy Holidays!!

Monday, December 28th, 2009 by stacey

Welcome back green smoothie goers!  We hope you had a splendid holiday with friends and loved ones.  As you get ready to celebrate the New Year, we’d like to share a very special poem from one of our green smoothie program participants!

A Thank You From Mrs. Claus

- by Rena Reason

T’was Christmas day and the North Pole was humming
With laughter and song and dancing and drumming,
The elves were gleefully at play in the snow,
And the reindeer were frolicking to and fro.

Since Santa had traveled the world far and wide,
He settled in his rocker, a bit sleepy eyed,
But thanks to Green Smoothie Queen, I hurried to the kitchen,
Got out my blender and knew what to mix in,
Then handed Santa a green jug and said “Sip on this!
It’s full of flavor, nutrition, and bliss!”

Said Santa, “It’s sweet like candy cane, and as green as a Christmas tree!
It’s bliss to my lips, yummy to my tummy, and gives me great energy!
This beverage gives such leverage, Ho, Ho, Ho, I feel so alive!
I could sing out Christmas jingles and dance the Jive!”

These groovy Green Smoothies are quite a sensation,
Let’s get the word out all over the nation,
Milk and baked cookies are things of the past,
Green Smoothies are the real elixir at last!

Thank you your Majesty, Green Smoothie Queen,
for showing me how to blend fruits and greens!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good year,
Let’s drink to our Health with Green Smoothies and Cheers!

Green Smoothies and Holiday Travelling - Part 3 of 3

Friday, December 18th, 2009 by stacey

by Stacey Terry

As I’ve discovered, drinking green smoothies through the holidays IS possible.  But the best intentions and the best blenders in the world don’t mean much without nutritious food!  Thus…

TRAVEL CHOICE #3:

I know which fruits and greens I’ll have access to once I’m at my destination and what I may need to bring and/or buy.  My goal: make choices that are simple, yummy, and that require minimal effort.

Just as most people have blenders kickin’ around somewhere, many people have bananas and romaine lettuce.  Now if bananas and romaine are nutritional improvements for you, then I’d say hooray - you’re good to go for a few days!  If not, you may want to see what’s close by for grocery stores and have an idea of how to drive to them.  Thankfully my parents now stock up more on the things they’ve seen me use in smoothies (though… I have yet to see her come home with seaweed of any kind).  Still, I do tend to have less variety when I travel.  My smoothies are often bananas and spinach or bananas and mixed greens.  Yes, variety is better, but if finding kale is difficult or if my mother, in her sincere efforts to be helpful, is going to stress out about “having something already” for me and looking in the store for persimm-a-somethings, then I will choose to be simple for a few days.  The “it’s still better than a cheeseburger” mantra gets me through any worries.

I’ve even frozen some of my smoothies if I know there are going to be days where I just can’t get to the blender to make a fresh one.  Is it perfect?  No sirreee-bob.  But, and say it with me, “it’s still better than a cheeseburger.”

Chances are, if you keep your smoothies simple, your non-green friends and family may actually be willing to give one of your smoothies a taste test.  Once they see for themselves how yummy they are, you may have opened the door a crack for them to make their own health improvements.

That’s all we’re trying to do really…  Make improvements…  Enjoy a better quality of life and health.  It does take a little planning and creativity, but it’s possible… and you can even make it fun!  (You OPTION 2 people know who you are!) Every time I’m out of my home environment, and I hear those magic “What is THAT?” words, I grin… because now I have an opportunity to share what I’ve learned.

And as you enjoy and get ready for your holidays, I hope you’ve found some useful thinking and tools over the last few days.  A very Merry Christmas to you and to The Green Smoothie Queen!  I look forward to catching up with you in The Emerald Lounge in the New Year!

Green Smoothies and Holiday Travelling - Part 2 of 3

by Stacey Terry

So, have you at least gotten the suitcase out of the closet?  I haven’t.  Actually, I still have to do laundry before I go.  It’s a lot of work to go on a trip isn’t it?  But if I didn’t do my laundry, I’d have no clothes to wear.  And if I didn’t have any clothes to wear, I think the family photo in front of the Christmas tree this year would probably break the ‘most number of comments’ record I’ve received on any of my Facebook photos.

So… unless one is fond of sharp coniferous pine-ies in the hiney, then there are just some things that need to be done before-hand.  Which leads me to my tip for you today…

TRAVEL CHOICE #2:

I make sure I know what tools I’ll have access to once I’m there, and what I may need to bring.  My goal: make choices that do not allow for excuses.

If you’re sticking to green smoothies like me, then someway, somehow, you’re going to need a blender. As I see it, you have two options:

OPTION 1 - Call ahead to your destination and ask if your family or friends wouldn’t mind bringing an old blender up  from the basement or making sure they can find the lid (I’ve learned the hard way that a blender lid can be the start of a great day or the initiative you needed to wash your kitchen cupboards, walls, canisters, light fixtures - you get the idea).  If they don’t have one, then pack yours into the car.

OPTION 2 - Don’t call ahead.  Just pack your blender.  Once you arrive, leave the suitcases in the car initially and show up on that doorstep with just your trusty blender tucked under your arm.  At no time in the exchange of greetings and other common pleasantries should you acknowledge that you have blender under your arm.  Create an air of mystery.  The loser is the one who acknowledges the blender first.  Be the ‘winner’ in your family.  ;-)

Where there’s a will there’s a way… it all depends on your circumstances and your willingness to apply effort.  Maybe the hotel you’re staying at has a restaurant; many times the cook or chef is willing to accommodate guests and would likely make a green smoothie for you if you asked.  If you want to maintain control yourself, check to see if there’s a local second-hand store nearby where you can pick one up cheaply, and then you can leave it behind or donate it again when you go.

There’s no doubt about it, figuring out the blender situation is the “ay, there’s the rub” when it comes to being on the road.  But people do make this work.  In fact, I know there are even “tailgater” blenders out there that plug into your car’s cigarette lighter socket.  But uh, it probably goes without saying, please blend and drive responsibly.

And with wisdomy pearls like that, I’m sure you’ll be back tomorrow to check out my last piece of advice for you before you head out for the holidays!

Green Smoothies and Holiday Travelling - Part 1 of 3

NEWS FLASH: Maintaining my lifestyle tends to get a bit dicey when I head home for the holidays.  (Okay… so maybe it’s more like a 3:45 a.m. news flash versus a 6:00 p.m.’er.)

I discovered raw food about a year ago, and since then I’ve meandered my way from the SAD diet through various levels of vegetarian, vegan, and raw, but the one relatively consistent pleasure remains my green smoothie breakfasts.  Thankfully, they’ve become a habit now, and that’s the way I like to keep it!  So, if you’re like me and you’ll soon be out of your ordinary environment and exposed to coffee pots, shortbread, and gravy (beware the dreaded gravy radiation!), then you’ll need to know how to make healthy choices while you’re travelling.

Over the next few days, I’ll provide you with the tips and personal lessons that I’ve picked up along the way that roll around with my mind-marbles when I know I’m going to be homeward or vacation-bound.  Starting with…

TRAVEL CHOICE #1:

I decide before-hand what my attitude is going to be and what level of raw/vegan is going to be realistic.  My goal: make choices that limit shame and guilt.

A few years ago, I tried to go on a week’s vacation with the intention that I would stick to the diet I was on at the time.  We travelled by car to a hotel, and I took two coolers with me of salads (I remember the big honkin’ bag of veggie coleslaw in particular), fruits, and healthy snacks.  I knew the hotel we’d be staying at didn’t have any fridges in the rooms, so my plan was to keep buying ice and use my coolers as mini-fridges.  I was all gung-ho to be committed and completely avoid eating out!  Well… that lasted until the first large social opportunity came along and everyone wanted to go out for supper.  I didn’t want to miss out, but I found that good intentions were not enough to keep me from digging into the deep-fried junk along with everyone else at the table.  Afterwards, I felt *darned* guilty that I hadn’t stuck to my plan.  Worse, I felt so bad that I kinda (as in totally) gave up.  By the time we were ready to head back home, my room had the rather enchanting aroma of rotten uneaten cabbage. So… that didn’t work.

On the other hand, I’ve also made trips out to visit family with the intention that I would just set aside my lifestyle goals completely and “be free”. I believe, I’ll start again on New Year’s is one of my fonder Christmas delusions.  At least letting go was certainly one bargain I had no problem sticking to.  But it was a deceptive choice; I still fell prey to the guilt and shame because I experienced all the negative consequences of consuming too much unhealthy food - feeling tired, unhappy, and very, very, the-scale-says-WHAT?, guilty.  The result - same negative emotional outcome and a trip to the store for bigger jeans.

These days, I’m more about embracing what’s realistic for me.  I try to balance having a plan, and giving myself some freedom. My plan is to maintain my smoothies.  That gives me a LOT of freedom for the rest of the day.  The most important thing I’ve learned is that same philosophy I’ve seen The Green Smoothie Queen remind me of time and time again (and boy, I need that reinforcement daily!) - it’s not about being perfect; it’s about getting in more of what’s good for me.  When I start the day knowing I’ve already consumed a half-tub or a whole bunch of greens, I recognize what an achievement that is for me - how much of an improvement it is compared to all the Christmases that came before.  And instead of shame or guilt, there’s actually satisfaction.

And sometimes that satisfaction actually sprouts into pride, and then I find I’m reaching for the fruit bowl more often than the shortbread tin.

I’m sure you want to spend your holidays feeling good.  Only you know what triggers your shame and guilt.  Your first tip for travelling: know yourself, be pro-active and limit those triggers!

Once you have your brain on board, then you can move on to the nitty-gritty stuff!  More to come on that tomorrow!

What You Give Away Comes Back To You

I was just about stampeded a few moments ago when The Green Smoothie Queen came rushing into the room, eyes beaming, and frantically waving a page at me.  “Having a dull moment are we?”  I asked.

I believe I was able to discern “act of kindness” and “true spirit of giving” in the rush of grinning animated babble with which she answered me.  Oh, and I think she was happy!

Apparently, the Queen received an e-mail that had delighted her.  She told me there’d been a little impromptu gift exchange.  One little decision on the Queen’s part to get into the Christmas spirit had inspired a similar act of kindness from one of our program participants.  I could see our gorgeous gal was genuinely touched!

I’m all for spreading giddiness, so I am delighted to share with you the poetic gift that the Queen received today, and I hope it brings a similar smile to your lovely faces!

Can you help name THIS green?

Monday, December 14th, 2009 by stacey

Good day lifestyle enthusiasts!  One of the best features of the Green Smoothie Blender Bender programs is that they are sooo interactive.  The programs provide you with information, solutions, inspiration, and opportunities to connect, and you provide us and your fellow participants with experiences, feedback, questions, and stories.  It’s win-win!  And it’s especially fun when you participate in a live program.  In case you haven’t signed up yet, the green smoothie Countdown to Christmas is festively flying along!  A few days ago, the Green Smoothie Queen received this e-mail from one of the countdown participants:

Kerry's children sharing a smoothie

Kerry's children sharing a smoothie

Hi there.  I am one of the countdown greenies who has not yet checked in with a note.  I have grown attached to my green smoothies, which I try to make twice a day now.  I almost have to if I want to drink more than a cup at a time.  I am a mother of four, and that blender full of smoothie does not go far with three lusty guzzlers who often beg for more.  If my husband is around, I usually have to keep adding ingredients.  He loves them!  Only my eldest will not drink them (8 years), and he is my best salad eater.  I thought that odd.  Anyway, my biggest challenge is paying for all of that organic frozen fruit here in Texas during the winter!  I suppose that it would all even out if I could finally kick my sugar addiction.  High quality chocolate and other sweets sure do cost me a lot, both monetary and health wise no doubt.  I was told that consuming more greens would reduce cravings, but so far that is not the case.  This has been a real disappointment.  I really do not know how people do it.  This is seemingly insurmountable for me.  At least I am blessed with a fairly good metabolism so far.  Sigh.

Kerry's son and a smoothie

Kerry's son and a smoothie

Thank you for the reminders to stay on track and to try something new.  Speaking of trying something new, I was at the store last night and decided to purchase two new greens.  Strangely, neither was labeled.  I was there so late in the evening that I was unable to locate a produce clerk.  Since I made a really tasty smoothie with one of them this morning, I want to be able to write down the name.  Perhaps you can “name that green” this time.  I will send photos of the two mystery greens along with a few of my littlest ones with mild green faces.  My one year old loves to sip down a smoothie with a straw.  She is serious about it!  The photo shows her with my 7-year old who had already finished hers.  My 3-year old is still in his pajamas.  He was playing knight when he came down to drink his smoothie.

Kerry

I’m sure many of you can relate to Kerry’s words.  Are your family members joining you in guzzling the fun as you strive to make improvements to your lifestyle?  Are you running into snags or unexpected surprises?  Each of us has such a unique physiology; it makes sense that our successes and frustrations will be similarly distinct.  Perhaps it may take Kerry a little longer for the greens to reduce her cravings, especially when sweets are still in the diet.  And at this time of year when sweets are all around, maybe the success is just in recognizing that the greens are still coming in and giving her and her family nutrition!  What would YOU tell Kerry? Share your thoughts and make a comment!  We have to work together to overcome that “seemingly insurmountable” wall we all hit from time to time.  What gives you hope and keeps you on track?

But to end this Monday on a fun note, I’m extending Kerry’s mystery green question on to you!  Give me your green guesses and have a splendid week!!

I started as a vegetarian when I was 14, but gave up when as a married woman I tried to start a family and had a miscarriage. I was frightened (unnecessarily) about my diet having a bearing on my ability to conceive and started to incorporate fish and some meats back into my diet. Two children later, I found it difficult to get back to being vegetarian when the rest of the family were eating flesh foods so it wasn’t until my eldest turned 10 and was continually asking to become vegetarian that we made a pact, that we’d both go veggie as long as she would eat what I say she needs to eat for her health. She’s now almost 17 and I am happy to say we are both very healthy!

My husband and son are another matter. My husband is overweight despite cycling everywhere in his job, he suffers from Ulcerative Colitis for which I have had him on organic Molasses since April and currently he has no symptoms. At the start of the year we had a very stressful time as we both thought he had Colon Cancer, all the symptoms seemed to fit but two colonoscopys later we discovered he had UC running the entire length of his Colon and ten biopsies confirmed it was consistent with UC. The hospital have had him waiting 5 months until he sees the Consultant, this appointment is in two weeks from today and meanwhile he has been cured by my Molasses experiment, or so it seems! Would you believe they actually never prescribed him any medication, even though he was passing a LOT of blood every day? I think they will be very surprised at his turn-around in health due to the Molasses. Because of his experiences with his Colon health my husband is quite sceptical about eating a lot of greens and fruits, but he has been gradually coming around to the idea and in fact yesterday he tried my smoothie when I got a takeaway from a Juice Bar. He didn’t like it, due to the seeds haha! But I am going to continue to push the idea for him.

My 13yo son and I are both asthmatic, although I’m very well these days. Both my son and my husband eat a largely vegetarian diet for ease of cooking on my part, however they both supplement their diets with meat wherever they get the chance (lunches, eating out, and the occasional home cooked meaty meal). He has been suffering during the school holidays with wheeziness which has just about gone since he has been sampling my smoothies this past few days! He has noticed the benefits and we have been discussing the potential for his health if he starts having a green smoothie each day. I always hold out hope that he will become vegetarian full time, since he can see how easy it is for me and not to mention cheaper! I believe I have brought my children up to understand the basis of good nutritive foods and this coupled with knowledge of raw foods will give them a great start in their young adult lives when they become more independent.

My husband and I did a month of raw eating back in 2007 but we both found it very difficult. I seemed to be constantly trying to think of things we could eat and chopping ingredients. It largely consisted of raw patés and salads, and lunchtimes we were generally just eating a plate of greens with nuts and things. It became very boring and a real chore to chomp through. One thing I have learned from International Green Smoothie Day is that a glass or two of highly nutritious drink can contain all I need, including the fiber often lost through juicing, with no reason to feel I am missing out on the digestive process begun in the mouth by chewing one’s food. I think a lot of people just gulp down juices in the name of health, lacking in fiber and not bothering to chew, partly because they taste ‘like medicine’ because they haven’t got enough sweet fruits or water and because they don’t feel the need to chew - no skin or bits of pips or seeds. Of course, juices have their place in our diets, but the fiber lost along with some of the vitamins, minerals, fats, amino acids and other properties is a real waste unless the pulp is used to make raw crackers etc.

Anyway I am rambling LOL.

I didn’t hold an ‘event’ unless you count the event itself of taking more green smoothies in, realising several things including those described above, and also the fact that I can ‘get by’ with just my little stick blender! It suits my tastes fine but I’m not so sure I’ve converted hubby just yet as it’s not quite ’smooth enough’ for him. I’ve educated and spread the word at my local juice bar, who are considering adding greens to their menu of available fruit and veggies, and I have gotten my parents interested in eating more things raw including Beets!

I’ve also realised I don’t ‘need’ to buy lots of raw superfoods like Maca, Mesquite, Lucuma, Blue Green Algae, et al to have a healthy balanced raw lifestyle and I am looking forward to setting out to be High Raw once again, with no guilt trips when I feel I want something cooked.

I feel I am off on my path once again; I just took a diversion is all! Thank you so much everyone for this opportunity to take part, learn more, feel more and share more!

We have two boys, 13 and 17! They fight over the fullest glass, even if it’s just by a smidgen! And our granddaughters love to drink this from their “sippie” cups. Minus the nuts and flaked coconut, of course!

Approx. 2 cups of different greens (see below)

2 cups restructured alkaline water

Pulse blend until liquefied

2 T. of flaxseed oil

1/4 cup of fresh coconut water from a baby Thai coconut

1 cup almond milk (optional) made from raw almonds is extra wonderful!

1/2 avocado (optional)

4 frozen strawberries (may use any other berry such as blueberries, raspberries, or all together)

2 frozen bananas

Fresh or flaked unsweetened coconut (optional)

5 pecans or almonds (optional)

Raw agave nectar to sweeten

Pulse blend until smooth. Blend for approx. 10 seconds, and then turn on high for another 20 seconds.
Mild tasting Greens I’ve had success with:

Beet Greens

Chard

Baby Spinach

Dandelion greens

These greens are GOOD, especially kale, but I use sparingly for my boys because they don’t like a strong ‘green- tasting’ smoothie:
