Kate’s Christmas Cure-All!

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 by stacey

- by Kate Nicholson

Well, I managed to negotiate Christmas fairly successfully. Not 100% raw, but high raw and vegan. No sugar or alcohol (don’t need either to have a fun time anymore!). I offered round Doll’s delicious ‘cocoa surprises’ from her ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ cookie recipes after dinner. (Thank you so much for those, Doll!). Much dubiousness initially from all of the non-raw brigade (especially the men), which changed to exclamations of delight after a bite! They polished off the lot. Ha!

Next day, when everyone emerged at breakfast time slightly hung-over and groaning at all the rich food they’d consumed, I offered green smoothies all round. Amazingly, they all (from the 93-year old down to the 8-year old) agreed to try them.

The concoction I whizzed up was designed to be cleansing, refreshing, and energising.

Greenberry Delight!

Serves One. Increase amounts according to numbers.

  • 1 generous cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 large banana
  • 3/4 cup parsley
  • ½ cup kale (stripped from stem)
  • splash of Agave
  • 1 heaped tsp spirulina

The frozen strawberries give a delicious juicy coolness; they’re packed with vitamin C and potent antioxidants such as the anthocyanins which give them their rich red colour and which help to protect cell structures and prevent oxygen damage in the body. They are also anti-inflammatory (excellent for my sugar eating folks) and protective against certain cancers.

Good old bananas provide a great source of energy which got my flagging family off the sofa and out into the countryside for a good long walk. (Not the 93-year old. My smoothies aren’t quite that magical!). They also provide the mood boosting amino acid tryptophan and have a natural antacid effect on the stomach to counteract the acidity caused by a glut of rich foods. Their high levels of potassium are beneficial for lowering raised blood-pressure, while their generous levels of B vitamins improve nerve function.

Parsley contains volatile oils which have been shown to inhibit tumour formation in animal studies and is a rich source of vitamin C and vitamin A. It is high in antioxidants and is considered an effective blood cleanser, dissolving sticky deposits in the veins and maintaining the elasticity of the blood vessels. Parsley is also excellent for cleansing the breath! (Good for my cigarette smoking brother-in-law).

Kale, a member of the brassica family, is another cancer preventative due to its sulphur-containing phyto-nutrients, such as sulforaphane, which boosts the body’s detoxification enzymes. Sulforaphane is formed when cruciferous vegetables such as kale are chopped, chewed, or blended. Kale is also well known for its carotenoids which protect the eyes from developing cataracts. In addition to its many other benefits, Kale provides a good dose of calcium.

Agave, although not raw, is a useful natural sweetener for its low impact on blood sugar and the saponins it contains which have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.

The fresh water algae Spirulina is an excellent source of chlorophyll (anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing, it helps in growth and repair of tissues and neutralises free-radicals. It is also destroyed by cooking, so keep drinking those greens!).

Well, my family have all vowed to eat more raw food and try to get green smoothies into their diets on a regular basis. I intend to make sure this is one New Year resolution they all stick to!

I started as a vegetarian when I was 14, but gave up when as a married woman I tried to start a family and had a miscarriage. I was frightened (unnecessarily) about my diet having a bearing on my ability to conceive and started to incorporate fish and some meats back into my diet. Two children later, I found it difficult to get back to being vegetarian when the rest of the family were eating flesh foods so it wasn’t until my eldest turned 10 and was continually asking to become vegetarian that we made a pact, that we’d both go veggie as long as she would eat what I say she needs to eat for her health. She’s now almost 17 and I am happy to say we are both very healthy!

My husband and son are another matter. My husband is overweight despite cycling everywhere in his job, he suffers from Ulcerative Colitis for which I have had him on organic Molasses since April and currently he has no symptoms. At the start of the year we had a very stressful time as we both thought he had Colon Cancer, all the symptoms seemed to fit but two colonoscopys later we discovered he had UC running the entire length of his Colon and ten biopsies confirmed it was consistent with UC. The hospital have had him waiting 5 months until he sees the Consultant, this appointment is in two weeks from today and meanwhile he has been cured by my Molasses experiment, or so it seems! Would you believe they actually never prescribed him any medication, even though he was passing a LOT of blood every day? I think they will be very surprised at his turn-around in health due to the Molasses. Because of his experiences with his Colon health my husband is quite sceptical about eating a lot of greens and fruits, but he has been gradually coming around to the idea and in fact yesterday he tried my smoothie when I got a takeaway from a Juice Bar. He didn’t like it, due to the seeds haha! But I am going to continue to push the idea for him.

My 13yo son and I are both asthmatic, although I’m very well these days. Both my son and my husband eat a largely vegetarian diet for ease of cooking on my part, however they both supplement their diets with meat wherever they get the chance (lunches, eating out, and the occasional home cooked meaty meal). He has been suffering during the school holidays with wheeziness which has just about gone since he has been sampling my smoothies this past few days! He has noticed the benefits and we have been discussing the potential for his health if he starts having a green smoothie each day. I always hold out hope that he will become vegetarian full time, since he can see how easy it is for me and not to mention cheaper! I believe I have brought my children up to understand the basis of good nutritive foods and this coupled with knowledge of raw foods will give them a great start in their young adult lives when they become more independent.

My husband and I did a month of raw eating back in 2007 but we both found it very difficult. I seemed to be constantly trying to think of things we could eat and chopping ingredients. It largely consisted of raw patés and salads, and lunchtimes we were generally just eating a plate of greens with nuts and things. It became very boring and a real chore to chomp through. One thing I have learned from International Green Smoothie Day is that a glass or two of highly nutritious drink can contain all I need, including the fiber often lost through juicing, with no reason to feel I am missing out on the digestive process begun in the mouth by chewing one’s food. I think a lot of people just gulp down juices in the name of health, lacking in fiber and not bothering to chew, partly because they taste ‘like medicine’ because they haven’t got enough sweet fruits or water and because they don’t feel the need to chew - no skin or bits of pips or seeds. Of course, juices have their place in our diets, but the fiber lost along with some of the vitamins, minerals, fats, amino acids and other properties is a real waste unless the pulp is used to make raw crackers etc.

Anyway I am rambling LOL.

I didn’t hold an ‘event’ unless you count the event itself of taking more green smoothies in, realising several things including those described above, and also the fact that I can ‘get by’ with just my little stick blender! It suits my tastes fine but I’m not so sure I’ve converted hubby just yet as it’s not quite ’smooth enough’ for him. I’ve educated and spread the word at my local juice bar, who are considering adding greens to their menu of available fruit and veggies, and I have gotten my parents interested in eating more things raw including Beets!

I’ve also realised I don’t ‘need’ to buy lots of raw superfoods like Maca, Mesquite, Lucuma, Blue Green Algae, et al to have a healthy balanced raw lifestyle and I am looking forward to setting out to be High Raw once again, with no guilt trips when I feel I want something cooked.

I feel I am off on my path once again; I just took a diversion is all! Thank you so much everyone for this opportunity to take part, learn more, feel more and share more!

We have two boys, 13 and 17! They fight over the fullest glass, even if it’s just by a smidgen! And our granddaughters love to drink this from their “sippie” cups. Minus the nuts and flaked coconut, of course!

Approx. 2 cups of different greens (see below)

2 cups restructured alkaline water

Pulse blend until liquefied

2 T. of flaxseed oil

1/4 cup of fresh coconut water from a baby Thai coconut

1 cup almond milk (optional) made from raw almonds is extra wonderful!

1/2 avocado (optional)

4 frozen strawberries (may use any other berry such as blueberries, raspberries, or all together)

2 frozen bananas

Fresh or flaked unsweetened coconut (optional)

5 pecans or almonds (optional)

Raw agave nectar to sweeten

Pulse blend until smooth. Blend for approx. 10 seconds, and then turn on high for another 20 seconds.
Mild tasting Greens I’ve had success with:

Beet Greens

Chard

Baby Spinach

Dandelion greens

These greens are GOOD, especially kale, but I use sparingly for my boys because they don’t like a strong ‘green- tasting’ smoothie:

How Green Smoothies Have Changed my Life (From Fibromyalgia to Energy and Health — Green Smoothie Testimonial)

Monday, April 6th, 2009 by Aran

green smoothie jug!Green smoothies have changed my life: literally!

Fibromyalgia had crept into my life and snuck up on me, leaching away my energy and quality of life. I wasn’t able to do those fun things that I enjoyed doing with my children (such as dancing in the rain) and I had become fairly housebound. I gave up fighting it and just accepted that this was how I would have to live.

Then I discovered the Raw Divas and the power of green smoothies!

I no longer accept that I can’t do things: fibromyalgia no longer rules my life. The first change I noticed was that my skin was softer and smoother, with smaller pores. Then I noticed that my elimination was much better. Considering that previously I thought a bowel movement once every two to three days was normal, this was a wonderful thing! Then I noticed that my energy levels were improving: that sluggish feeling was greatly decreased. My arms and legs no longer felt like jelly with the weight of lead.

My sleeping pattern has also improved. Insomnia has been a fact of life for me as long as I can remember. Even as a young child I couldn’t just fall asleep at night. The insomnia became worse as I grew older, and eventually I had to resort to sleeping tablets. I’m now sleeping more normal hours, and can look at cutting back and then giving up the sleeping tablets.

Depression has figured in my life for a long time due to both external happenings and the fibromyalgia (my brain doesn’t produce enough seratonin). I’ve started cutting back on the anti-depressants, and the mood swings haven’t appeared at all!!! It is wonderful knowing that I can finally reduce the dosage and can even look forward to going off the tablets altogether.

Being able to DO things again has been pure joy. My mental clarity has improved, and so I’m able to enjoy reading again. Due to concussion sustained in a car accident in February, 2008, I’ve not been able to think on my feet very much. Since committing to 1.5 litres (quarts) of green smoothie each day, I’ve noticed a huge improvement with mental clarity. I can start studying again. :-) cymbidium orchids

This is my testimony to green smoothies and the amazing changes in my life since introducing them into my diet. If you haven’t yet tried a green smoothie, then I urge you to do so. You will never look back.

Blessings,
Veronica

Rawvolutionarily Different: Healing Diabeties and More with Green Smoothies and Raw Foods (Green Smoothe Guest Post by Naturopath and Living Foods Coach Pamela Reilly)

Monday, March 23rd, 2009 by tera

pamela Hello! My name is Pamela Reilly. I’m a Naturopath and Living Foods Life Coach who lives in Indianapolis and who has experienced truly miraculous healing from raw foods. I want to thank Tami so much for inviting me to be a guest blogger! I consider it a privilege and an honor to be able to share information on this amazing blog.

I am currently in the process of allowing my body to heal from 42 years of having Diabetes. My posts therefore focus on using raw foods to reverse or control Diabetes. Today’s post shares the special challenges folks with Diabetes face when they go raw, and my second post will share nutritional information about foods known to lower blood sugars along with recipes for delicious Green Smoothies made without fruit.

I’ve “played” with raw foods since 2005, going through periods of high and low rawness. Late last year I decided it was time to get serious. I went 100% raw, vegan on January 1. The difference between being 25-75% raw with few restrictions and 100% raw, vegan with restrictions related to my Diabetes has been incredible.

Please note that I typically avoid the use of the word “diabetic” because I never want to define someone by their disease. To save space, however, I do refer to my friends with Diabetes as “raw diabetics” in these posts. For those of you unfamiliar with Diabetes, it is an illness where a person’s body is unable to turn glucose (a simple sugar) into energy. This inability is either caused because the person’s body stops producing insulin (Type 1) or because the person’s body stops using the insulin produced by the body (Type 2). I chose not to devote much time to explaining diabetes in these posts. Please feel free to contact me if you’d like additional information. Spinach

I switched to raw foods because I was determined to reverse 42 years of Diabetes and associated complications. I had experienced healing from many health issues using nutritional support and other natural remedies, but Diabetes and a dead Thyroid gland remained a constant battle. Raw foods allowed my body to completely regenerate my Thyroid gland so that I no longer need any medication. Raw foods also reduced my insulin needs from 70 units per day down to 7-10 units, and that amount continues to drop. You can read more about my healing journey at my blog: Rawvolutionary Healing and in another recent guest blog post at:  Pamela Reilly’s Rawvolutionary Healing.

My biggest passion is teaching about and coaching others in the living foods lifestyle. Diabetics face some very specific challenges when they go raw, but have few resources to help them get over the bumps. The focus of my life is providing practical tips and encouragement to raw diabetics. Perhaps the most obvious challenge faced by raw diabetics is that they experience dramatic changes in how they control their blood sugars after they go raw. Most experience dramatic drops in blood sugar levels and insulin needs, which is a good thing, but many also experience periods where their blood sugars drastically drop and rise for no apparent reason. These extreme fluctuations are exacerbated by the detoxification process. The fluctuations wreak havoc with the raw diabetic’s emotional outlook, energy levels, and
overall feeling of well being.

It is incredibly frustrating to do everything right but have their blood sugar control actually worsen. The emotional side of going raw for a diabetic is a much larger issue than it is for most raw foodists. The interviews I’m doing show that some diabetics experience far more emotional upheaval related to physical changes created by raw foods than others do. This may mean they require more support and encouragement than others. On the other side of the coin, some diabetics experience such dramatic changes in their health that their emotional outlook greatly improves.

apple with stethoscopeRaw diabetics’ struggles are often complicated by the fact that their doctors don’t understand raw foods and refuse to work with them to make the necessary adjustments in medication dosages. Many of the diabetics I’ve interviewed and spoken with either abruptly quit taking all medication, or stop consulting their physician and make all medication changes on their own. This is potentially a very dangerous situation. One of my goals is to create a database of MDs who will work with and advise raw diabetics on making medication adjustments in a safe manner. I also hope to eventually work with MDs to provide training on the living foods lifestyle to mainstream medical professionals, but many “attitude hurdles” must be jumped before that can happen.

The second largest difference between a raw diabetic and other raw foodists is the raw diet a diabetic eats to control their glucose levels. Many diabetics go raw after seeing the movie, Simply Raw: Reversing
Diabetes in 30 Days
, a movie that follows six diabetics on a 30-day raw adventure. The movie is incredibly inspiring and eye-opening. I still get misty when I watch it, and I’ve shown it more times than I can count! I encourage you to get a copy of the video to share with diabetics you know and love, your church or civic organizations to which you belong. This message needs to be heard!

Cure Dieabetes book coverThe diet followed by most raw diabetics is the one proposed in Dr. Gabriel Cousen’s books, There is a Cure
for Diabetes
, and Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine. I highly recommend both of these books to anyone with diabetes, and highly recommend the “Rainbow Green” book to anyone seeking extreme healing from any health issue.

The diet proposed in these books has some interesting restrictions and is broken into three phases. Each phase restricts some foods but progressively allows more foods to be included in a person’s daily meals. Right off the top, the program eliminates all animal products, processed foods, white flours, white sugars, caffeine, mushrooms, nutritional yeast, and other foods considered to have high levels of minute toxins called “mycotoxins.” Phase 1 of the program strictly eliminates the intake of any and all fruits. It also eliminates the intake of high-glycemic veggies such as carrots and beets, starchy vegetables such as potatoes, all fermented foods, and raw cacao. Raw diabetics also typically need to limit the amount of grains and seeds they eat, as these can elevate blood sugars. Some raw diabetics
experience glucose spikes from nuts and therefore also need to limit their intake of nuts. Dr. Cousens explains that restricting these foods
accelerates the body’s ability to heal itself in a variety of ways. His organization graciously shares an online chart showing the foods allowed in each phase at Summary of Phases.

The restricted foods can make it tricky to follow many “mainstream” raw food recipes, but I’ve found it’s very easy to adapt recipes to fit the program. In main course recipes, it’s usually OK to just delete dates and raisins from the recipe, using common sense. I also substitute Stevia for raw honey or agave, use thin cucumber slices instead of mushrooms, and so on.

This diet is anything but restrictive, though! The foods that are permitted can be combined to create a wide array of dishes that are both gorgeous and truly delicious! I feel I have more variety in the foods I eat now than I ever did before. I also never feel “deprived,” but savor and celebrate the uniqueness of every meal. Both of Dr. Cousen’s books contain a wide variety of recipes, and I’m very busy creating new recipes every day for my hubby and I to enjoy. (He went raw a few months after I started Phase 1, mainly because of the miraculous health he saw me regain.)

The final unique challenge that raw diabetics face is opposition from those who love them and who believe they are harming themselves by eating living foods. When most people go raw, their friends and family may respond with surprise, but eventually accept their lifestyle change and give it little thought. This is not always true for raw diabetics. Some raw diabetics are surrounded by people who love them dearly but who can’t believe that a simple dietary change could reverse diabetes. These family members are extremely fearful and are often angered that their loved one is trying an approach that goes beyond their physician’s recommendations. I hear repeated stories from raw diabetics who were subjected to many angry outbursts by a family member or friend, or who even had a loved one break off a relationship because of the diabetic’s switch to raw foods. This type of opposition and stress can be overwhelming and often comes during the most difficult initial stages transitioning to a raw food lifestyle. Thankfully, most of this opposition disappears once the loved ones see the dramatic healing experienced by the diabetic.

All of these challenges require a raw diabetic to have extremely high levels of determination to successfully go raw and stick to the program. Let’s not forget that in the midst of these special challenges, a raw diabetic still goes through the “normal” raw food transition challenges of changing ingrained habits, detoxing, battling cravings, and so on.

It takes a very special person to choose to reverse their health issues by adopting the raw food lifestyle. If you know a diabetic who has gone raw or is considering going raw, please go out of your way to encourage them on a daily basis. They will love you for it! I look forward to sharing with you again! Go find the abundant wellness God intends for you!
