natural hair and skin care

With eating a healthier diet, comes the quest for more natural health and beauty aids.    Thankfully these days, shampoos laden with parabens, sulfates, cones, alcohol and other drying ingredients can be replaced with more natural choices.

When I use conventional soaps, lotions, shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, and other products, I can see and feel the difference in my skin.  My skin is dryer and tighter, and itchy.  My hair is drier with all of the chemicals in some of the shampoos and hair care products.  On the other hand when I use all natural products, I feel much better wholistically.  My skin is softer, (more…)

Raw Skin Care

Thursday, February 4th, 2010 by stacey

When you’re a Green Queen, you get pretty excited right away when you realize how much clearer, healthier, and brighter your skin becomes on a diet of greens, but of course, there is no end to the lovely raw food tricks you can use to make yourself feel and look royal.  So today, I’m happy to share with you a contribution from the lovely Lisa.  Just try to keep your fingers out of your toiletries!!

Before I got serious about going raw, I didn’t give any real thought to the fact that the skin is the largest organ of the body.  I’ve since realized that as a major organ of your body, what you put on it should be given some importance.  It might not be the same as ingestion through the mouth, but your skin gives and takes nutrients and harmful substances, and it should be accorded appropriate consideration.  Vibrant skin is the result of a healthy body, and no chemical process or makeup can be a substitute for healthy skin.

There are many ways to care for your skin that do not involve costly products (most of which have all manner of unhealthy ingredients).  It is key to remember that no matter what you topically put on your skin, it will never be healthy if you eat and drink an unhealthy diet.  Removing processed foods from your daily food intake and adding high water content foods to your regular diet will go a long way to improving your skin.  The second thing to remember is that it is ideal to only put things on your skin that you feel good about putting in your mouth.

If you want to evaluate your existing skin care products, here is a list of things that you should avoid in any skin care (or makeup) product:

  • Mineral Oil, aka paraffin, paraffin wax, petrolatum (these prevent the skin from breathing)

  • Dioxane - a derivative of coconut

  • Fragrance

  • Parabens, such as methyl, proply, butyl, ethyl papaben (these all create long shelf life)

  • Alcohols:  ethanol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl, isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol (these dry and strip skin of natural cover that protects against moulds, viruses and harmful bacteria

Here are some foods that have helpful properties for the skin:

  • Almond oil:  for dry skin, removes old pimple scars

  • Apples:  good for preventing fine lines, treats itching or cracked skin

  • Apricots:  use juice for sunburn, itching, or eczema

  • Cucumber:  use juice for skin eruptions

  • Honey:  Use 1 tsp with water for blemishes - also adds a nice glow

  • Paw Paw:  Use as a rub for glow; or use juice of the entire fruit for pimples, whiteheads and acne

  • Potatoes:  grate and create poultice for blemishes; wrinkles, blackheads

  • Tomatoes:  Use for 1 hr on face for pimples

Beautiful Skin Food (Green Smoothie with Kale, Pineapple, Banana and Coconut water)

beautiful skin care - coconutNowhere is your skin more noticeable, than on your face. I recently had a conversation with someone who has tried so many products on the market to help control the redness, sensitivity and breakouts on her face and chest. After looking over her diet and the amount of stress she had in her life, I knew she needed a big change.

I believe that food is more than what taste good, don’t get me wrong I love exploring the different flavors of food, but I believe that fruits and vegetables provide nutrients to our skin cells at a cellular level. I’m happy to say, that after drinking pure clean water, adding fruits and vegetables to her diet and getting more sleep, I have seen a noticeable difference in my clients skin and emotional state. beautiful skin care - kale

I remember having a conversation once with a dermatologist who didn’t see the connection between poor diet and inflammation of the skin. My first thought was that this person is a dermatologist and has gone to medical school and who am I to sit and explain how what we eat has a huge impact on our skin. Well after working with several skin care clients and noticing the visible difference in their skin after changing their diet and lifestyle, I can now say without a doubt, that foods, especially fruits and vegetables have a major impact on the health of our skin.

How Green Smoothies Have Changed my Life (From Fibromyalgia to Energy and Health — Green Smoothie Testimonial)

green smoothie fibromyalgiaGreen smoothies have changed my life: literally!

Fibromyalgia had crept into my life and snuck up on me, leaching away my energy and quality of life. I wasn’t able to do those fun things that I enjoyed doing with my children (such as dancing in the rain) and I had become fairly housebound. I gave up fighting it and just accepted that this was how I would have to live.

Then I discovered the Raw Divas and the power of green smoothies!

I no longer accept that I can’t do things: fibromyalgia no longer rules my life. The first change I noticed was that my skin was softer and smoother, with smaller pores. Then I noticed that my elimination was much better. Considering that previously I thought a bowel movement once every two to three days was normal, this was a wonderful thing! Then I noticed that my energy levels were improving: that sluggish feeling was greatly decreased. My arms and legs no longer felt like jelly with the weight of lead.

My sleeping pattern has also improved. Insomnia has been a fact of life for me as long as I can remember. Even as a young child I couldn’t just fall asleep at night. The insomnia became worse as I grew older, and eventually I had to resort to sleeping tablets. I’m now sleeping more normal hours, and can look at cutting back and then giving up the sleeping tablets.

Depression has figured in my life for a long time due to both external happenings and the fibromyalgia (my brain doesn’t produce enough seratonin). I’ve started cutting back on the anti-depressants, and the mood swings haven’t appeared at all!!! It is wonderful knowing that I can finally reduce the dosage and can even look forward to going off the tablets altogether.

Being able to DO things again has been pure joy. My mental clarity has improved, and so I’m able to enjoy reading again. Due to concussion sustained in a car accident in February, 2008, I’ve not been able to think on my feet very much. Since committing to 1.5 litres (quarts) of green smoothie each day, I’ve noticed a huge improvement with mental clarity. I can start studying again. :-)

This is my testimony to green smoothies and the amazing changes in my life since introducing them into my diet. If you haven’t yet tried a green smoothie, then I urge you to do so. You will never look back.

Blessings,
Veronica
